NCAA Sports Betting Gonzaga vs Tennessee

January 7, 2009

The Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-4, 5-5 ATS) will look to put an end to its three-game losing streak when it invades Knoxville this evening to take on head coach Bruce Pearl’s Tennessee Volunteers (9-3, 5-4-1 ATS); tip-off for the game is scheduled for 9:00 ET and the game will be broadcasted live on ESPN2.

Tonight’s NCAAB sports betting affair will be the second meeting of the season between these two powerhouse clubs. Gonzaga got the best of the Vols in the Old Spice Classic title game back in November by an 83-74 final count. The nine-point victory saw Gonzaga cover the spread as two-point neutral court favorites, and the combined 157 points went under the closing ‘total’ of 157.5 by the slimmest of margins. The win avenged their 2007 neutral court loss to the Vols, so each club stands 1-1 SU and ATS against one another over the last two seasons.

BetOnline Sportsbook currently has Tennessee installed as four-point home favorites with a game ‘total’ of 156 points.

Head coach Mare Few’s Bulldogs enter tonight’s game losers of three in a row both SU and ATS. In fact, if you take out the exhibition game against Texas Southern back on December 18th, the Bulldogs haven’t won or covered a spread for college basketball bettors in three-plus weeks. The loss at Arizona was understandable since the Wildcats are always tough in the desert, but they choked away a regulation neutral site win against UCONN only to lose both SU and ATS in overtime and followed it up with a shocking outright loss at the hands of the Portland State Pilots as lofty 21.5-point home favorites. Oddsmakers expected them to get over the hump at Utah where they were tagged as five-point road favorites, but the Utes won outright 66-65 to hand the Bulldogs yet another tough defeat. Gonzaga now stands 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS on the road/neutral sites this season

The Volunteers had their three game winning streak snapped this past weekend against a scrappy bunch of Jayhawks within historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas bolted out to a double-digit lead before the crowd was fully settled in their seats, and save for a late game run from the Vols, cruised to the 92-85 home win and cover. The loss dropped the Vols to 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS as a visitor in 2008-09. The stories been much better for the Vols at home though who stand a perfect 6-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS.

The college basketball betting trends don’t look too bright for Gonzaga in this spot as its 1-4 ATS in its L/5 road games, and a very poor 1-7 ATS the L/8 times its squared off against a representative from the SEC. Tennessee is 5-0-1 ATS its L/6 when installed a home favorite, and it’s a solid 7-3 ATS the L/10 times off a SU and ATS defeat. ‘Total’ players take note: the ‘over’ is a perfect 4-0 ATS the L/4 times Gonzaga’s been installed a road underdog, and its 5-1 ATS the L/6 times the Vols were installed a home chalk of this magnitude.

Can the Bulldogs scratch out a second win against Tennessee in the same season to put an end to its losing skid, or will the Vols keep its undefeated home mark intact to even up the season series?
