NCAA Football Week 5 Picks – Clemson at Maryland
October 3, 2009
Clemson (-13) vs. Maryland (+13)
O/U (48)
Saturday, October 3 – 12:00 PM ET
The Clemson Tigers (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS, 2-2 O/U) didn’t look very good in losing their last game at home, but will have an excellent chance to bounce back when they battle the winless Maryland Terrapins (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS, 3-1 O/U) at Byrd Stadium on Saturday at 12 PM ET.
Clemson was shut out in the second half of its 14-10 home loss to TCU on Saturday, but got 114 rushing yards and a touchdown from star halfback C.J. Spiller in Week 4.
The Tigers failed to cover the game’s NCAAF betting odds as 2-point favorites while the final score played Under the 40.5-point O/U total.
Chris Turner threw one touchdown but three costly interceptions as Maryland fell to Rutgers 34-13 in a Week 4 home loss that left the team winless coming into this contest.
The Terrapins failed to cover the spread as 1-point home favorites while the game’s final score played Under the 49.5-point O/U total.

Analysis: I initially had some reservations about Clemson covering such a high spread on the road and the more I looked at Maryland’s play this season, the more I became convinced that this team could barely beat a division 2A school.
While the Terrapins have gone a solid 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a home underdog, the Terps have also compiled a dismal 1-4 ATS mark in their last five conference games and identical 1-4 ATS record in their last five home games.
Maryland has also gone 0-4 ATS in their four games this season while the Clemson Tigers have gone an impressive 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games and 7-2 ATS against a team with a losing record.
Further cementing my belief that the Tigers are going to cover the spread in this matchup is the fact that the Tigers have gone an impressive 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall while the road team has gone a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
With the Under going 8-1 in the last nine meetings and 4-1 in the last five meetings in Maryland, I also like the Under to play out in this matchup.
