August 29, 2010

The Civil War – Every year, the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers have at it in their annual rivalry that is known as one of the bloodiest in college football. This year, with the USC Trojans ineligible, the Ducks and Beavers could be playing for a spot in the Rose Bowl for the second straight year, as this could be the de facto Pac-10 Championship Game. Check out our NCAA football predictions for Civil War 2010.

Had the Ducks kept Jeremiah Masoli out of trouble, perhaps we would think a bit differently of this game. Backup Nathan Costa is going to be thrust into the starting role with Masoli’s dismissal from the team. Even though he’ll have a full season to get used to the starting job, the bottom line is that Nathan Costa is no Jeremiah Masoli.

Then again, we all said that LaMichael James was no LeGarrette Blount, too. Boy, were we wrong with that! James ended up rushing for a whopping 1,546 yards on the year as a freshman. Not bad for a kid that ended up taking over in Week 2 after one of the clear cut early Heisman Trophy contenders was suspended indefinitely.

The Quack Attack probably won’t be as potent on offense this year as they were last, so don’t expect to see a comical 231.7 rushing yards or 36.1 points per game put on the board. Still, Costa is quite capable of doing a lot of damage with his arm, and he is expected to lead the U of O to a double digit win season in 2010.

Replacing Sean Canfield is going to be incredibly difficult for the Beavers this season. Ryan Katz is going to take over under center, but he only threw 27 passes last year, completing 14 of them for 232 yards with a TD.

The key for Katz is going to be navigating the ball into the hands of the Rodgers brothers. Jacquizz is on many people’s Heisman Trophy watch list in his senior year. Last season, Rodgers rushed for 1,440 yards, caught 78 passes for 522 yards, and totaled 22 scores. Expect him to top the 2,000 all purpose yardage plateau once again this season.

For brother, James, 2,000 all purpose yards is virtually guaranteed as long as he keeps returning kicks and punts. Rodgers had team highs in receptions (91), receiving yards (1,034), kick return yards (840), and punt return yards (151). He also had 303 rushing yards and 12 total tuddies.

Stopping this Oregon State duo is going to be virtually impossible for Oregon and everyone else in the country it faces. Oregon might be able to win this game, but asking it to win by more than the 3.5 points that it was favored by at the outset of the preseason is going to be too tough. Our NCAA football predictions call for an Oregon State upset, so take any points you can get!
