NCAA Football Line Says #19 Iowa Ends #5 Michigan State’s Undefeated Season

October 30, 2010

The NCAA football betting line on the Michigan State vs. Iowa game says that the Hawkeyes end the Spartans’ undefeated season this Saturday, Oct. 30th.

What’s surprising isn’t that the Hawkeyes are favored to beat Michigan State on Saturday, it’s that they are favored to beat Michigan State by almost a full touchdown.  Iowa is a -6 ½ point favorite over MSU even though the Hawkeyes go into the game off of a stunning 30 to 31 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers.

Should Iowa be favored by that many points or is there a flaw in the NCAA football line that football handicappers could exploit?

Michigan State Spartans           +6 ½ -110       O 50 ½ -110

Iowa Hawkeyes                       -6 ½ -110        U 50 ½ -110

The NCAA football line trends give the edge to neither team to cover ATS in this game.

  • The Michigan State Spartans are 5 and 0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
  • The Michigan State Spartans are 0 and 4 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
  • The Iowa Hawkeyes are 13 and 3 ATS in their last 16 games following an ATS loss.
  • The Underdog is 4 and 1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

MSU has been excellent both straight up, they’re 8 and 0, and versus the NCAA football line when going 6 and 2 against the spread this season.  The Spartans beat Wisconsin by 10 points, 34 to 24 as 3-point dogs, Michigan by 17 points as 5-point dogs, and are coming off of victories over Illinois and Northwestern.

But the college football odds makers aren’t convinced that the Spartans have what it takes to beat Iowa on the road.  I have to disagree with the odds makers.  There is a serious flaw in the NCAA football line because there’s no way that the Spartans should be +6 ½ point dogs.

Eventually, the line will correct itself to possibly MSU +5 ½ or even +5 because football handicappers, after they take a look at what’s been going on with Iowa, will jump all over MSU.  Sparty should be the underdog in this game but they shouldn’t be such a big underdog.  Why?  Because Iowa’s vaunted defense has been downright pathetic lately.  The Hawkeyes’ refusal to play a dime or nickel D has resulted in Michigan racking up 28 points against them and Wisconsin racking up 30 points against them in the past two games.

Michigan State averages 213 passing yards through the air.  They have a balanced offense that also rushes for 119 yards per game on the ground.  MSU had trouble with Northwestern last Saturday but I firmly believe part of that trouble had to do with them looking ahead somewhat to this game.

And the Spartans still pulled out the victory last week and covered the spread against Northwestern.  That’s how good this team is.  Michigan State is also the only team that could keep Michigan Wolverines’ QB Denard Robinson under control. They held Denard to 86 yards on the ground and forced him into throwing 3 picks.  Sparty’s D is playing better than Iowa’s overall at this point in the college football season.

I believe that there is a flaw in the NCAA football line for this game. The Spartans should be -3 ½ to -4 ½ point dogs at best.  Tons of dollars should flow onto Michigan State the closer we get towards this game.

I’m going to back Michigan State against the NCAA football line in their game versus Iowa on Saturday.

NCAAF Betting Pick:  Michigan State Spartans +6 ½ -110
