Rutgers enters this game off what was certainly the most impressive win of their season, when they upset conference rival UConn last weekend at home.
They scored 10 points in the final four minutes to steal the win.
Really though, the story of that game was the emergence of true freshman quarterback Chas Dodd. Just a few weeks ago, Dodd was a happy to be there freshman, holding a clipboard and signaling in plays to sophomore Tom Savage. But when Savage went down with an injury two weeks ago, Dodd stepped in, and got Rutgers their best win of the year.
Simply put, Dodd was phenomenal last weekend, as he completed 18 of 29 passes for 322 yards and a touchdown, as the Scarlet Knights sprung the upset. That sole touchdown was a big one, as he threw a 52 yard pass to junior Mark Harrison to tie the game up at 24 late in the fourth quarter. A San San Te field goal sealed the win in the closing seconds.
But despite the big win, the Scarlet Knights have a test as they host NCAA Football Line underdog Army on Saturday. So far this year, Army has received little respect nationally, despite their 4-2 mark, and three wins in their last four games.
As an offense, few teams run the ball better than the Black Knights, as they rank ninth in the country, averaging 274 yards on the ground per game.
The leader of this option attack is sophomore quarterback Trent Steelman. On the year, he’s rushed for 355 yards and seven touchdowns, while his top running mate- Jared Hassin- has been even better, with 393 yards on the ground himself. The two truly are a dynamic duo.
And it’s because of this running game, that we’re calling for the upset. take Army with your NCAA Football Line pick.
Yes Army is good, but really this is about Rutgers. Was last weekend for real?
Honestly, we’re not sure. Even with a victory, this team still ranks towards the bottom of the NCAA in total offense and scoring offense, averaging just 328 yards and 20 points a game.
Even with the emergence of Dodd, they lack a clear cut No. 1 running option, as no player on this roster has rushed for 100 yards in a game since Joe Martinek in Week 1. Should the Scarlet Knights really be a touchdown favorite against anyone in college football?
Rutgers very well may win this game, but it’ll be closer than the prognosticators predict. Take Army in your NCAA Football Line pick this weekend.
