NCAA Football Line – 115th Battle for the Victory Bell

October 9, 2010

Don’t assume a team getting points and having a better win-loss record than their opponent makes this a smart play against the NCAA Football Betting Line. This could be an uninformed decision unless you look at the quality and circumstances involved.

Softball teams in tee ball leagues pad that record to look good to the alumni that are pushing pride in their teams while sporting the education. That’s worthy, but this column is about NCAA Football Line education.

Miami (OH) Redhawks (3-2) at Cincinnati Bearcats (1-3) – Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 ET ESPN3

Nippert Stadium (35,097) – Cincinnati, Ohio

NCAA Football Betting Line:

Miami (OH) Redhawks (3-2 ATS) +17½ (ML +650)

Cincinnati Bearcats (1-3 ATS) -17½ (ML -900)

Over/Under Game Total -  50 ½

It’s the 115th Battle for the Victory Bell in the oldest non-conference rivalry in the United States. Cincinnati was never threatened in last year’s battle, conquering the Redhawks 37-13.

Cincinnati is coming off a 2 week layoff after a near upset of the Oklahoma Sooners. That 31-29 loss was actually a big step for the Bearcats and first year head coach Butch Jones to move on after some early season lessons.

Junior quarterback Zach Collaros was hammered for a loss 15 times in the first 3 games. That kind of education advances a kid quick in this game. He followed those games with a fearless effort against Oklahoma throwing for 305 yards and almost engineering an upset.

The return of running back Isaiah Pead, who ground out 169 yards, helped open up the passing game along with the improved protection for Collaros. If Pead can be consistent with his rushing output helping the passing game, this team is not done by a long shot in the Big East Conference.

The only category the Bearcats seem to be above mediocre in is passing yards, even after the weak opponent schedule.

My guess would be that this young Miami team would like to keep this game close at least. They’ve been blown away by at least 14 points the last 4 meetings. I’m sure Coach Michael Haywood wants to develop some confidence in his quarterback and this team for the future.

Quarterback Zac Dysert has completed 67 percent of his passes averaging 211 yards passing a game. He’s really just an average quarterback in a below average team which the NCAA Football Betting line reflects as a 17½ point underdog.

I’ve got to hand it to this team for scoring 17 points in the 4th quarter last week to take down Kent State which surprises me. This is more the exception than the rule for this team.

The Redhawks have had some injuries that hurt, and usually when you hear that it doesn’t mean too much. In this case, it means everything. The depth chart here would be like comparing a snorkeler to a Deep-Sea Scuba Diver.

This is a serious competition for these two teams for bragging rights ad Southwest corner of Ohio ownership. It sounds like this is a pimp contest without pimps or hot ladies.

The NCAA Football Line says Cincinnati should be favored by 17½ points. Don’t look at the records of these teams because it misleads the bettor unless you are doing your homework.

This is an easy play. You take that NCAA Football Line and Cincinnati giving 17½ points gladly knowing that the Bearcat pimps of Cincinnati now own Southwest (not airline) Ohio.
