NCAA Football Betting Pick – Boise State vs Virginia Tech
September 7, 2010
The Boise State Broncos have spent years claiming they are among the Nation’s best teams. In 2010, they open the season as the third-ranked team and will spend the season proving the pundits right for ranking them so high. The key for the Broncos to remain at the top this season will be getting past through their first couple of games which are the toughest on an otherwise weak schedule. Their first game is against the number 10 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies and based on the football spread, this will be a close game.
The College Football odds have set the football spread favoring the Boise State Broncos by -1½ over the VT Huskies. The game total is set at 50 points.

Boise State Broncos -1½ -110
Virginia Tech Hokies +1½ -110
Game Total 50
Location: Fed Ex Field – Landover MD
Game Time: 8:00pm
TV: ESPN
Monday’s game will be played at the neutral site of Fed Ex Field in Landover, Maryland, so the neither team should have a home field advantage for season opening tilt.
Boise State begins the season against number 10 Virginia Tech, Wyoming and then against the current 24 ranked Oregon State. After those games, the only other team “tough” game on the schedule is Hawaii November 6. The rest of the games should be easy victories for the Broncos. A miscue against the VT or Oregon State, Boise’s BCS title hopes go up in smoke but if they can make it through the first three weeks at 3-0, they should cruise to the BCS title game in January.
Against the Hokies, the Broncos will need a big game from quarterback Kellen Moore. Moore is an early Heisman candidate this season after compiling a 26-1 record, 7022 passing yards, 64 touchdowns passes and just 13 interceptions. Last year he tossed 39 TDs and just 3 interceptions.
Boise led the WAC division in defensive scoring by holding opponents to 17.1 points and with nearly every starter returning for 2010, they will be better this season.
Boise’s opponents Monday night Virginia Tech are the Broncos only real challenge all season, it’s true the Beavers are a ranked team but if they get past the Hokies, the Beavers won’t be a problem.
The Virginia Tech Hokies will rely on their stout defense to slow down Kellen Moore. The Hokies defense ranked ninth in the nation holding opponents to only 15.6 points per game, they ranked 11th in passing defense limiting opponents to 167.1 yards a game and only allowed nine TDs on the season.
There are some concerns though after the team lost seven starters from last year’s squad.
Offensively the Hokies will have Tyrod Taylor under center. Taylor amassed 2311 passing yards and gained another 370 yards on the ground last season, his first as a starter. The Hokies boast an impressive running back tandem of Ryan Williams and Darren Evans. Evans is back after tearing his ACL in 2009, in 2008 Evans set an ACC record of 1265 yards. In 2009, his running mate Williams one-upped him by rushing for 1655 yards and 21 TDs.
Personally, I would love to see VT beat Boise so we don’t have any more controversial questions about who plays in the BCS Title game. If Boise has a perfect season, I don’t know if I would rank them above a one loss Alabama or Ohio State team just based on their schedule strength. However, realistically the Boise State Broncos should win this game by 10 points and will cover the football spread -1½.
NCAAF Football Pick: Boise State Broncos -1½
