NCAA Football Betting Odds – Wisconsin vs UNLV

September 3, 2010

The Wisconsin Badgers begin their 2010 college football in Las Vegas as they take on the UNLV Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium Saturday night. The college football betting public expects the Badgers to win this game outright but the Rebels could keep it within the point spread.

The NCAAF odds makers have the Badgers as the -20½-point favorites but if football bettors feel the Rebels can pull off an upset, they can earn $900 for every $100 they risk on the moneyline.

The Wisconsin Badgers will have an experienced quarterback under center for their season opener for the first time in five years. Scott Tolzien was the team’s fourth opening game starting QB in four years and Tolzien returns to the Badgers for 2010. He leads the team to a 10-3 record with a win in the Champ Sports Bowl. He tossed 2705 passing yards with 16 touchdowns but did throw the ball away 11 times.

In the backfield the Badgers boast the 2009 Big Ten offensive player of the year, John Clay. Clay totaled 1517 yards and 18 touchdowns but he’ll be under close scrutiny after he underwent double ankle surgery in the offseason. He will have to give away carries to backfield mates, Montee Bell and James White.

While the offense is solid, the defense will be a question mark this season after the team lost 5 starters from last year’s squad.

The UNLV Rebels are under new leadership with Bobby Hauck taking the head coaching reins. Hauck comes from Montana where he led the Montana Grizzlies to an 80-17 mark in seven seasons.

Hauck is an offensive coach and the man responsible for leading the Rebels offense will be quarterback Mike Clausen. Last season Clausen passed for only 1230 yards and tossed nine touchdowns in the previous two seasons. As the full time starter, those numbers will obviously increase.

The Rebels defense has a lot of experience with six seniors anchoring the defense; tackle Isaako Aaitui, linebackers Starr Fuimaono and Ronnie Paulo, cornerback Quinton Pointer, and safeties Alex De Giacomo and Mike Grant are all expected to step up. While they aren’t going to shut down any teams, they should hold their own in what will be another losing season for UNLV.

If you are football betting on Saturday night’s game, look for Wisconsin to be a little shaky out of the gate and then pull away from UNLV in the second half after pounding them down with John Clay. That late start will keep them from covering the 20½-point spread.

Football betting pick: UNLV +20½
