NBA Update – The Cavs and Nuggets Continue to Roll

May 11, 2009

This has to be one of the most surprising NBA Playoffs in recent memory. With the exception of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets, no other team is really dominating. Denver has won against the spread in every game during these playoffs, while Cleveland is undefeated both straight-up and against the spread and will look to remain so in their Monday night game against the Hawks.

Let’s get updated on each series.

NBA Update

Atlanta Hawks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

The Hawks looked like they had a shot in the third game of this series but then Cleveland became Cleveland and just ran away from them. They covered an 8 ½ point spread on the road against Atlanta in game three after covering 12 ½ and 11 ½ point spreads in their previous two games in the series. LeBron’s line? 47 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. The Cavs look to put the Hawks away in Game Four on Monday night.

Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Yao Ming breaks his foot in Game Three and gamblers, this guy included, believe that the Lakers will win two more straight to put the Rockets away. Houston promptly responds with a 99 to 87 victory as 7 ½ point home dogs. What? Okay, the Rockets really have no shot moving forward but the way they stepped up with Yao on the bench, Aaron Brooks put up 34 points, and Shane Battier put up 23, was impressive. The Lakers will win this series, but letting Houston back into it is a bad sign. It’s really bad because they might have to face the Nuggets in the Western Conference.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Denver Nuggets

The second most impressive team in these playoffs so far isn’t the L.A. Lakers but the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets are 7 and 1 straight-up in these playoffs and 8 and 0 ATS. Sure, the non-call on the foul against Melo is controversial. Well, maybe not. I mean, if you go to foul the guy and the ref doesn’t call it, who’s to blame? Not Melo who drained a three with a second left to give the Nuggets the victory in Game Three. Denver should put Dallas away in Game Four on Monday night. After that, they wait for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Boston Celtics vs. Orlando Magic

The Magic had a huge chance to take a 3 to 1 lead against the Celtics on Sunday but instead lost the game 95 to 94. Now, this series is tied and going back to Boston. What’s up with Orlando who is 6 and 4 straight-up in these playoffs and 4 and 6 against the spread? In any case, the team that wins this series won’t be looking forward to LeBron and Co.
