NBA Spread Betting – Atlanta Visits New York In Battle of Playoff Hopefuls
February 17, 2011
The Atlanta Hawks have started to play with a vigor that we haven’t seen from them during much of the basketball betting season. Josh Smith looks outright pissed that he was denied an All-Star spot, though he doesn’t really deserve it. Smith has always been the key player in the Hawks’ rotation, and he’s starting to finally play with the juice and intensity that has been lacking. Of course, an inability to do that on a consistent basis has been his downfall.
NBA spread betting and the Atlanta Hawks has been a coin-flip decision for the most part because of their ups-and-downs. Part of the reason I attacked the Joe Johnson contract was because I strongly feel that a max contract should go to a guy that produces ballistic numbers in key moments, along with presenting strong leadership skills. This team has been together for what seems like forever, and they’re just 6-6 ATS in NBA spread betting over their last 12 games. Does that sound consistent to you?

Atlanta Hawks (34-20) vs. New York Knicks (27-26)
Wednesday, February 16th — Madison Square Garden — 7:30pm EST
NBA Spread: NYK -2.5 (205.5)
While Atlanta may be all Indians and no chiefs, the Knicks at least know who their leaders are. Raymond Felton may never be considered an elite point guard, but he gets the job done and Amar’e Stoudemire has led by example all the way this season. The problem is that New York’s supporting cast isn’t great, and despite Stoudemire’s best efforts, the Knicks are just 2-4 SU and 3-3 against the NBA spread in their last 6 games.
The Hawks continue to be somewhat of a mystery and that makes playing the NBA spread in this matchup a big confusing. For my money, I’ll take the Knicks in a statement game at home. The Hawks haven’t proven much to me in the way of NBA spread betting this season and I need to see that this forward momentum can be carried for multiple weeks at a time before I start trusting them fully.
NBA Spread Betting Pick – New York -2.5 (UNDER)
BONUS PICKS!
New Jersey Nets +10.5 over BOSTON CELTICS
The Celtics don’t take games like this seriously, and while the Nets are just 2-5 SU and ATS in their last 7 games, they usually play in Boston pretty well. New Jersey wont’ get the win, but that NBA spread is just too big for a Celtics team that is just 2-4 ATS in their past 6 games anyways.
Los Angeles Lakers -11.0 over CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
Remember when this matchup meant something? Well not anymore. Without LeBron James, the Cavaliers have descended in to such a funk that it’s almost hard not to feel sorry for them. The Lakers are just in a two-game losing funk right now, but that was against Orlando and a Charlotte team that always gives them trouble. Cleveland doesn’t possesses the type of momentum nor stars to stop L.A’s bench team so take the Lakers despite a curiously large NBA spread, which has the Lakers Tax attached to it.
