NBA Postseason Parlay – Detroit at Cleveland

April 19, 2009

The Cleveland Cavaliers (66-16 SU, 50-32 ATS, 36-45-1 O/U) and Detroit Pistons (39-43 SU, 34-48 ATS, 39-41-2 O/U) will both be looking to pick up an SU and ATS victory in the BetOnline Sportsbook when the square off in Game 1 of their first round playoff series today at Quicken Loans Arena at 3 PM ET.

The Cavaliers won the regular season series 3-1 and have gone 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games against Detroit.

After dropping their first meeting this season, the Cavaliers have won three straight while covering the spread in two of those contests.

The Pistons dropped their final three regular season contests including its 102-96 loss to Miami as a 2-point road favorite while the Cavaliers won five straight before losing its regular season finale to Philadelphia 111-110 as 3-point home underdogs.

Here is a look at tonight’s key trends, followed by my in-depth analysis and NBA Free Picks.

The Pistons are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600.

The Pistons are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Conference Quarterfinals games.

The Cavaliers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Eastern Conference.

The Cavaliers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 playoff games as a favorite.

The Favorite is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

The Under is 29-6 in the last 35 meetings.

The Under is 18-5 in the last 23 meetings in Cleveland.

The Pistons are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

NBA Odds

Cleveland Cavaliers -12 -110

Detroit Pistons +12 -110

Over 175 -110

Under 175 -110

Analysis: While I don’t see the Detroit Pistons having a realistic chance of winning this series over the superior Cleveland Cavaliers, I do think they have enough talent and pride to cover the big double digit spread in this contest. This is just the second double digit spread between these ballclubs in the last 10 meetings with the Pistons covering as 10-point road underdogs in their March 31 meeting.

While the Under has played out in eight consecutive meetings between these two division rivals, I like the Over here as this O/U total looks a bit low, even for a grinding postseason game.

NBA Free Picks: Pistons +12 Points/Over 175 Total Points
