NBA Playoff Odds – Suns Will Take Game 1

May 4, 2010

The Western Conference semifinals continue with the best of seven set between the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns. BetOnline Sportsbook asks five questions that will determine which one of these two powerhouses will advance to the Western Conference Finals.

NBA Basketball Odds
San Antonio Spurs EVEN
Phoenix Suns -130

  1. Which team will win the tempo battle? Obviously, if the Suns have it their way, they’re going to be playing every single one of these teams in the 220s in total points scored. However, if the Spurs can assert themselves, they’d like to play in the 190s or 200s. Unlike San Antonio teams of the past, this one is more inclined to run a bit more because it is more athletic with G George Hill in the starting five. Expect a higher paced series, but not as quick as Phoenix would want.
  2. Do the Spurs have enough bodies to bang with Amare Stoudemire in the paint? Probably not. The Blazers did a great job of containing Stoudemire even though he had a consistent series. However, C Channing Frye wasn’t nailing his three pointers as he did in the regular season, which gave Portland the ability to keep bodies on the inside for Stoudemire. If Frye is connecting from long range, there may be no hope in the paint in this NBA playoff betting affair for the silver and black.
  3. Is Richard Jefferson a lost cause for the Spurs? Jefferson could be the difference maker in this series for the Spurs if he delivers. However, at just 9.2 points per game and 25.0 percent shooting from downtown in the first round, we have to wonder whether or not the former New Jersey Net has the ability to really help this team or not. If he can’t at least pick up his defense, HC Gregg Popovich is going to have to sit him down.
  4. 4: Will Steve Nash become more of a scorer in this series? Most likely, yes. Nash will find the sledding a lot easier going against the combination of Hill and G Tony Parker than he did against G Andre Miller for the Trail Blazers. The Canadian averaged 15.0 points and 9.8 assists per game in Round 1 of the NBA playoff betting festivities, and we look for him to step up in a big way to help Phoenix’s effort against San Antonio.
  5. Bottom Line: Who will win this playoff series? The Spurs have a real chance of getting through this series as well, but we tend to believe that this could be the year of the Suns. Phoenix is just playing incredible basketball right now, and if G Jason Richardson and some of the other long range shooters are hitting from the outside, this is an incredibly tough team to knock off. San Antonio’s age will dramatically show in this betting series, so look for Phoenix to end this series in six very hard fought games to set up a date with either the Lakers or Jazz in the Western Conference Finals.
