NBA Insider – Jason Williams Signs with Magic
August 21, 2009
The NBA Championship runner-up continues its massive roster overhaul by signing Jason Williams to back-up starter Jameer Nelson. Williams missed the 2008-09 NBA betting season, and last played as part of the Miami Heat where he averaged just 8.8 points and 4.6 helpers in 31.2 minutes a game.
The ten-year NBA veteran, who attended college at Florida University, is known for his street ball tactics, and is reminiscent of Rafer Alston, aka “Skip To My Lou”, who replaced Nelson after the deadly point-man went down with a torn labrum. However, Alston is entering his prime, and Williams is well beyond it. Either way, the Magic are tremendously thin at point-guard, so signing Williams is a big move for them.

Williams is the latest to join the Eastern Conference Champion Magic, joining Vince Carter, Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, Ryan Anderson and Anthony Johnson as the new wave of Magic talent in Orlando. Basically, the Magic have lost only Hedo Turkoglu to Toronto, and essentially signed up a whole new team. The starters will remain the same, with only Vince Carter being added to the starting lineup in place of Turkoglu.
The looming suspension of Rashard Lewis, who was banned for 10-games for use of a banned substance, is still in the air. Lewis’ loss is the Eastern Conference’s gain. With Boston trying to get the last out of the Boston Three Party, Cleveland adding Shaq, Toronto adding as many Europeans as possible, Washington getting Arenas and Butler back full-time, and Atlanta emerging as a cognizant force to contend with, the race for the playoffs is thick in the Eastern Conference. Orlando can not afford a bad start.
