NBA Christmas Day Matchup Spurs vs Suns

December 24, 2008

The San Antonio Spurs travel to Phoenix on Christmas Day to take on the Phoenix Suns in a key game between two Western Conference powerhouses. It was just about two months ago when some sports betting fans were ready to call it quits on the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were suffering straight-up and against the BetOnline online betting spread because both Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker were out due to injury. Not any more. With Parker and Ginobili back, the Spurs are now 18 and 10 straight-up. They’re still not all that great against the BetOnline online betting spread going 13-14-1 for the year, but they do play well when they’re not expected to. Parker is averaging 36 points a game which puts him in the MVP discussion.

The Phoenix Suns have been one of the stranger teams for NBA betting fans this season. They still have a lot of talent but they just aren’t as good as some might expect, going 16 and 11 straight-up and only 10 and 11 against the BetOnline online betting spread. They have more depth than they have in the past but they still haven’t really found a way to get Shaq to click with Amare Stoudemire.

Here are my personal online basketball betting odds for this game:

San Antonio Spurs + 4 ½ – 110 O 188 ½ – 110

Phoenix Suns – 4 ½ – 110 U 188 ½ – 110

Here are a few online wagering trends that might help us find a good online bet in this game:

The San Antonio Spurs are 11 and 5 against the spread in their last 16 games against a Western Conference opponent.

The Under is 11 and 1 in the San Antonio Spurs last 12 games vs. an NBA Pacific Division opponent.

The Phoenix Suns are 2 and 5 against the spread in their last 7 games at home.

The Spurs are 2-5-1 against the spread in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.

Christmas Day is usually a special day for both NBA players and NBA betting fans. The home team in most cases does very well on Christmas Day. I expect the same to happen here because the San Antonio Spurs usually have a tough time with the Suns during the regular season.

This Suns team isn’t nearly as effective running up and down the court as past Suns teams have been but Shaq can still play effective defense while Amare and Nash can put up points. The key in this game will be a Phoenix fan base that should be going crazy once they tip it off. With Jason Richardson playing D against Parker, I expect the Suns to find a way to slow him down. If they can keep him from scoring his usual 36 a game, then they have a shot to cover the online betting spread in this.

I like the Suns to cover a BetOnline online sportsbook wagering spread of 4 ½ points or less.
