NBA Betting Picks – John Wall Debuts Against Orlando Magic
October 29, 2010
There’s at least three reasons people are tuned in to the NBA betting action in Florida, and the Orlando Magic aren’t one of them. Even after finishing atop the Southeast division last year with a record of 59-23 SU, people simply don’t give a damn about Dwight Howard and Vince Carter. The only reason people will be watching this game is to see the NBA debut of John Wall.
The first overall pick in this year’s draft, Wall is an incredible talent and will battle with Blake Griffin for Rookie of the Year honors. His talent, his heart and his drive are all unquestionable. The problems arise when you look at the NBA betting metrics of the team he plays with.

The Wizards fell in to the tank last season with a 5-20 finished over their final 25-games. They’re also just 2-7 SU in their past 9 games when playing the Orlando Magic, and if you think that spread is too big, then I have news for you: they’re also 4-9 ATS in 13 games against Orlando.
Now, a lot of what sunk the Wizards last year had to do with Gilbert Arenas’s whole gun fiasco. How he gels with Wall for the time being (because I still think it’s very likely he gets traded) is paramount to how the Wizards fare on the NBA betting line. That is, of course, depending on how quickly Arenas recovers from his sprained ankle. Agent Zero will not be in the lineup for at least the first few games of Washington’s season.
Which makes this game a cake walk to bet on. Al Thornton and Andray Blatche will be the big forces upfront for Washington, and despite the expectations you have on John Wall to take over a game, you can’t expect the towering Magic to give the Wizards any second chances or points in the paint.
Washington Wizards (0-0) vs. Orlando Magic (0-0)
Thursday, October 28th — Amway Arena — 8:00pm EST
NBA Betting Line: Orlando -14.0 (192)
The Magic combusted in the playoffs because of a lack of leadership. That’s what happens when you’re basketball betting hopes lie on a screwball like Vince Carter or Dwight Howard. This isn’t to say that the Magic won’t find success in the regular season. I fully expect them to make the playoffs again.
Orlando is a stiff 12-2 SU in their last 14 games at home and are 4-1 SU in their past 5 games at home. The size of Howard and Rashard Lewis, plus the overall talent disparity between the Magic and Wizards, make easy picking for the Magic in NBA betting.
The question, as always, with Orlando will be how they fare in the playoffs without a true leader. For now, however, Orlando is a great home bet at the new Amway Arena, as they have been for the past few years in NBA betting.
Furious NBA Betting Pick – Orlando -14.0 (UNDER)
NBA BETTING PARLAY PICKS – Orlando -14.0 with Utah -7.0
UTAH JAZZ -7.0 over Phoenix Suns
The Suns are a running team, and their lack of size saw them gassed against Portland. It’s not so much that I think Utah is that much better, but they’ve been that “never bet against them at home” team in the Western Conference for a long time. Utah is 13-3 SU in their past 16 home games, and Phoenix is still trying to find the fire power to cover NBA betting lines like these.
