NBA Betting Picks – Jazz Visit Hornets In Huge Point Guard Battle

December 18, 2010

Derron Williams and Chris Paul used to be the only two contenders in the “best point guard in the NBA” debate, but neither has been able to outshine the rise of Derrick Rose during a season of NBA betting picks. While both teams are an afterthought in long term investments on the Western Conference, tonight is a chance for Utah to show it has some good value on the road.

Usually, the Jazz are a lights out team at home and handicappers usually tell you to stray away from them when they’re on the road. Their 6-3-1 ATS record when travelling says otherwise. Against the Hornets, Utah is also 5-1 SU in their past 6 games when serving the role of visitor as well.

Generally speaking, Utah is a streaky team. Since going 7-0 SU and ATS from November 22nd to December 1st, they’ve gone 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS in their past 6 games. So are they getting back on a hot streak in NBA betting picks, or not?

Utah Jazz (18-8) vs. New Orleans Hornets (15-10)

Friday, December 17th — 8:00pm EST

NBA Betting Line: Utah -1.0 (190.5)

We’ve wanted to anoint the Hornets as legitimate contenders because Chris Paul is one of the most exciting players in the league, but the fact is that since pulling off a trade to shed Peja Stojakovic off the payroll, they’ve fallen in to the gutter. Their recent slide and the trade date are mutually exclusive in general terms, but the milestone of that trade serves as a good starting point since their fantastic start came to end.

The Hornets are 3-9-1 ATS since the trade and haven’t really regained their form since opening the season as the most unstoppable force the league had to offer. A tight win over the lowly Sacramento Kings says enough to me about where New Orleans is right now, and until they prove they can beat up on the lesser teams in the league, they’re no match for the true contenders in the Western Conference when it comes to NBA betting picks.

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS -9.0 over Minnesota Timberwolves

I don’t like recommending betting against Portland when they’re playing at home, and though I like Minnesota a lot this has typically been a bad matchup for them. Close games are a nightmare in Portland, namely because they’re so good at the free-throw line, and their 7-2 ATS record when hosting Minnesota speaks for itself. Brandon Roy’s knees will give out eventually this season, but until that happens you have to take Portland when they’re at home.

Phoenix Suns +7.0 over DALLAS MAVERICKS

With a record of just 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, the Suns should be a stay-away bet in NBA betting, but against Dallas you can expect an historic performance from Steve Nash who always thrives in this matchup. The wheels in Dallas are slowly but surely coming off the bus, and they can’t cover big lines anymore as their team gets exhausted from the playoff-level effort they have to put out every night. You can’t trust Dallas in basketball betting picks right now, especially with Nash in a definitive vengeance game.
