NBA Betting – Jazz Takes Four-Game Losing Streak Into Los Angeles

January 25, 2011

NBA betting aficionados know that this isn’t the best time of year for the Utah Jazz, currently on a four-game losing streak.

They take that streak into the Staples Center on Tuesday night for a date with the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Game time is 10:30 PM ET, and in the NBA betting odds on this game, the Lakers are an eight-point favorite, with the total posted at 197.5 points.

Here are some of the trends that involve the NBA betting odds on this matchup:

  • Utah has lost four of its last five games SU
  • Utah has covered one of its last six games
  • Utah has played five of its last six games OVER the total
  • Utah has played seven of its last nine road games OVER the total
  • Utah has lost six of its last seven road games SU
  • Utah has covered one of its last seven road games
  • Los Angeles has won nine of its last eleven games SU
  • Los Angeles has covered two of its last six games
  • Los Angeles has played four of its last five games UNDER the total
  • Los Angeles has played six of its last seven home games UNDER the total

These teams have tangled only once this season, and the Jazz turned back the Lakers by a 102-96 score at the EnergySolutions Arena. So now, I guess, it is time for payback, and Utah has been having a hard time of it, to say the least. The Jazz has lost all four games on its current road trip, and the defeats have come not only at the hands of the Celtics, but also the Sixers, Nets and Wizards. When those things happen, you’ve got troubles. Utah has covered just two of its last 12 games in NBA betting.

The Jazz sits in second place in the Northwest Division, a game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team hardly situated in the Northwest. if the season ended today, Utah would be in the #6 spot in the Western Conference playoff queue. The Lakers have won nine of their last eleven games, and they are now the #2 team in the West. They whipped Denver on Friday night, and have had two days to get ready for this one.

Here are some of the head-to-head NBA betting trends that concern on this game:

  • Los Angeles has won six of the last seven meetings SU
  • Los Angeles has covered five of the last seven meetings
  • Eight of the last 12 meetings have gone UNDER the total
  • Fourteen of the last 19 meetings in Los Angeles have gone OVER the total
  • Los Angeles has won the last 16 meetings SU as the home team

Look at the way these teams have shot the ball lately. Utah, which has always prided itself on being a very accurate team from the floor, has shot 42% in its last four games. The Lakers, on the other hand, have hit 50% or better in each of their last three. You get the sense that Jerry Sloan would just like to get his team back to Salt lake City and go through some drills, so they can get themselves right. What’s very true here is that the jazz has not had much success at all at the Staples Center, as they have lost 16 straight games against the Lakers there. What’s more, in games where Los Angeles had Kobe Bryant available, they beat Utah 24 times in a row at home. We think it’s the same story here, and certainly wouldn’t venture to back Utah in the NBA betting odds.
