NBA Betting Insider –The Postseason’s Best Defensive Teams

April 22, 2010

Wanna know which NBA playoff teams are most likely to cover the pro basketball betting line and cash in for backers this postseason?

How about which teams will likely cover the NBA point spread no matter where they’re playing?

Well, then, this look at the top defensive ballclubs in the playoffs is just the thing you need to boost the annual NBA betting bankroll, because when it comes to winning championships, defense rules the day, not only in the NBA, but in every professional sport there is.

With those thoughts in mind – and more thrilling playoff action taking place this evening, let me get started.

  1. Charlotte 93.8 ppg
The Bobcats gave up less than 94 points per game this season, so it’s no wonder they went a terrific 44-37-1 ATS during the regular season and have gone 1-1 ATS against Orlando despite being in an 0-2 hole in their first round matchup.
  2. Miami 94.2 ppg
Miami’s defense looked mostly fantastic during the regular season, helping them record a solid 42-39-1 ATS record along the way. Unfortunately, the Heat have failed to live up to their defensive excellence in falling into an 0-2 hole to Boston. Maybe it’s me, but Miami’s Game 2 loss has me thinking a sweep could be in order for the Celtics.
  3. Portland 94.8 ppg
Portland also recorded a winning ATS record (44-36-2) during the regular season thanks to their terrific defense, which, by the way, has helped the Blazers get a road win against Phoenix in Game 1 of their first round series and record a respectable 1-1 ATS mark after two games.

  4. Orlando 95.3 ppg
Orlando may be known for its high-powered offense, but the fact of the matter is that the Magic allowed fewer than 96 points per game, helping them record a fine 46-34-2 ATS mark during the regular season.
  5. Boston 95.6 ppg
The Celtics are the first team on this list not to have recorded a winning ATS record during the regular season (33-47-2 ATS) and although they routed the Miami Heat in Game 2, I suspect they will struggle to cover the spread – and win games – in their next series.
  6. Cleveland 95.6 ppg
The Cavaliers also recorded a losing ATS record (38-43-1) during the regular season and barely cashed in against the Bulls in Game 1 before failing to cover the NBA betting odds in Game 2. Still, Cleveland’s ‘lockdown’ defense led to them recording the best record in the league during the regular season.
  7. Milwaukee 96.0 ppg
Milwaukee’s un-publicized defense helped them record an absolutely jaw-dropping 52-28-2 ATS mark during the regular season. Unfortunately, the Bucks don’t have blossoming center Andrew Bogut and have fallen into an 0-2 SU and ATS hole against Atlanta.
  8. San Antonio 96.3 ppg
The Spurs’ fine defense also helped them record a winning ATS record (44-37-1) during the regular season, not to mention, shut down Dallas in Game 2 of their first round series to pull even at 1-1 SU and ATS with Dallas as they head to San Antonio.

  9. Lakers 97.0 ppg
Like Cleveland and Boston, L.A. also failed to record a winning ATS record (33-46-3) during the regular season, facing daunting odds all season long. The Lakers are just 1-1 ATS in their series against Oklahoma City.
  10. Atlanta 97.0 ppg
Fueled by their fine defense, the Hawks went a bankroll-boosting 48-34 against the spread this season and 2-0 against a gallant but undermanned Milwaukee ballclub.

  11. Oklahoma City 98.0 ppg
The Oklahoma City Thunder used their stellar defense to record a fine 48-34 ATS mark during the regular season and nab an ATS win against the Lakers despite being in an 0-2 SU hole heading into Game 3.
  12. Utah 98.9 ppg
The Jazz may be known for their fourth-ranked offense (104.2 ppg) but Utah used its 12th-ranked defense to record a fine 49-30-3 ATS mark during the regular season. The Jazz went ballistic offensively against Denver late to win game 2 – and shut down Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups down the stretch to cover the NBA betting line as a 6-point road dog.
  13. Chicago 99.1 ppg
The Bulls ranked 13th in defense during the regular season to record a winning ATS record (42-38-2) and cover the NBA point spread against Cleveland in Game 2 as 10.5-point road underdogs. I like the feisty Bulls to cover the spread against Cleveland more often than not in their first round matchup.
  14. Dallas 99.3 ppg
The Mavericks ranked a mediocre 15th in defense and paid for it by recording a dismal 37-44-1 ATS record during the regular season. Dallas lost Game 2 to San Antonio and failed to cover the pro basketball betting odds as 3-point home favorites.
  15. Denver 102.4 ppg
The Nuggets may be the proud owners of the league’s third-ranked offense (106.5 ppg) but they also ranked a unimpressive 20th in defense, which could be the reason they recorded a bankroll-breaking 35-41-6 ATS mark during the regular season. The Nuggets’ lack of defense was apparent in their Game 2 loss to the offensively-gifted Utah Jazz as a 6-point home favorite.
  16. Phoenix 105.3 ppg
The Suns ranked first in offense during the regular season by averaging a whopping 110.2 points per game offensively – and the ballclub recorded a fine 48-33-1 ATS mark during the regular season. Unfortunately, the Suns ranked a pitiful 26th in defense – which could be why they lost Game 1 to Portland on Sunday as an 8.5-point home favorite to lose home court advantage in their first round playoff series.

NBA Gamblers Note: Check out the correlation between excellent defense and winning ATS records. Eleven (11) of the 16 teams in the postseason recorded winning ATS records while 14 of the 16 teams ranked in the top 15 in defense.
