NBA Betting – Bigger Battle Between Nets And Knicks May Be For Carmelo

February 13, 2011

NBA bettors may be aware that the New Jersey Nets are playing host to the New York Knicks on Saturday night, but the bigger battle might be over Carmelo Anthony, as the league trade deadline approaches. Game time will be at 7 PM ET at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Expect the Knicks to be a "road" favorite in NBA betting.

The Charles Jay Line (Estimate): New York -4

Here are some of the trends that involve NBA betting on this matchup:
(Trends good through Thursday; check Friday’s results)

  • New York has played four of its last five road games UNDER the total
  • New York has lost its last six road games SU
  • New York has covered 15 of its last 21 road games
  • New Jersey has covered two of its last seven games
  • New Jersey has won four of its last six home games SU

If you read the New York Post or the New York Daily News on a regular basis, you know that both of these teams are still in the running to acquire Carmelo Anthony. The word is that the Nuggets have once again contacted the Nets, who would appear to have much more to offer in the deal, considering they have up to six first-round draft picks in the next three years. So they’re the NBA betting favorite, if you will, in the derby. Not many people believed that Mikhail Prokhorov, owner of the Nets, was completely disqualifying trade talk anyway.

The Knicks were offering center Eddy Curry, forward Wilson Chandler, and a draft pick as the heart of their deal. The Nets probably won’t offer as much as they did before, but they haven’t really shown their hand yet.

Here are some of the head-to-head trends that concern NBA betting on this game:

  • New York has won four of the last six meetings SU
  • Six of the last eight meetings have gone UNDER the total
  • New Jersey has won 15 of the last 21 meetings SU as the home team
  • New York has covered six of the last seven meetings as the road team
  • Four of the last six meetings in New Jersey have gone OVER the total
  • New York has had the rebounding edge in each of the last five meetings
  • New York has made more three-pointers in four of the last six meetings

It is a truth that the trade talk has become a distraction for the Knicks, and another thing that will affect their performance, for NBA betting purposes, is that they have a game scheduled against the Lakers Friday night, and that is a game they have been very focused on, since the Lakers destroyed them last time out. The Nets will be traveling from Charlotte.

The Knicks have had some success visiting New jersey (covering six of last seven in NBA betting) and they will bring some fans for sure. They are also one of the better teams on the road, with an 18-7-1 ATS record. The Nets are catching points at home, and don’t lose sight of the fact that in the home dog role, New jersey has shined, with a 12-6 ATS mark in NBA betting. That, and the after-effect of the Laker game, points us toward the Nets here.
