February 18, 2011

On Friday night, the Rookie Challenge will once again take center stage in the NBA All-Star Weekend Betting. Why not get your wagers in now?

Previously we looked at some of the favorites to win the MVP Award, including guys like Blake Griffin, John Wall and Tyreke Evans. But what’s the fun in betting on the favorites? Here are some long shots to take home the award:

DeMarcus Cousins (+800): Cousins enters this game with as much uncertainty as anyone, as he was just recently suspended for punching teammate Donte Green in Sacramento.

Still, what one can’t deny is that Cousins is a flat out stud in the low post. And truthfully, his season numbers (14 points and eight rebounds per game) only partially reflect it, as Cousins has blown up of late. He has averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds in his last five games, and has recorded double-doubles in each of those contests.

Also, when making your NBA All-Star Weekend Betting picks, don’t forget who’ll be feeding Cousins the ball… his former Kentucky teammate John Wall. That could mean a big game, for “Big Cuz.”

Taj Gibson (+900): With all the winning that has gone on Chicago this season, it’s easy to forget about Gibson. Just don’t, because with Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah both missing time with injuries, the second year forward has been key to their success.

On the season, Gibson is averaging a stellar seven points and just under six points per game, numbers that again, have been skewed by playing with Noah and Boozer.

Gibson may not have the pedigree of some of the players in this game, but he does have the skill. Don’t be afraid to throw a wager in on him.

Brandon Jennings (+1000): In games like these, point guard play is key. Just last year, Tyreke Evans was co-MVP of this game.

Well this year, that MVP could be Brandon Jennings. The second year guard has again been stellar, putting up 15 points and five assists per game, numbers which have been skewed, as he’s slowly come back from injury early in the season.

DeJuan Blair (+1000): When it comes to all of the most surprising players in this season, has anyone been more impressive than Blair? The second year player out of Pittsburgh is averaging a respectable 8.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, but has really blown up in the month of February with an 11 point and 10 rebound average.

Also, don’t forget that along with Evans, Blair was co-MVP in this game last year.

Serge Ibaka (+1000): Finally, at 10-1, why not take a flyer on Serge Ibaka. The Oklahoma City big man has again had an excellent year, averaging nine points, seven rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game, all despite playing under 26 minutes a night.

At the odds you’re getting on Ibaka, is there a better NBA All-Star Weekend Betting wager you can make?
