NASCAR Power Rankings – Busch’s on Fire

March 9, 2009

The Kobalt 500 ended with another Busch victory, but the victor this time wasn’t the 2008 dynamo, Kyle Busch, but his bigger brother, Kurt Busch.

Kurt Busch made a scintillating move late in the race to pass Carl Edwards and then held off Jeff Gordon to score an impressive victory in the Kobalt Tools 500. With the victory, Busch solidified himself once again as a player on the NASCAR circuit.

Let’s take a look at the BetOnline online sportsbook NASCAR Power Rankings.

NASCAR Power Rankings

1. Kyle Busch – - Kurt’s younger brother finished 18th in the Kobalt 500, but he still gets the top ranking because of 2 top five finishes, 2 top ten finishes, and a victory this season. The younger Busch will be back.

2. Jeff Gordon – - Gordon hasn’t won a race yet, but 2 top ten finishes and 2 top five finishes makes Gordo one of the best drivers right now on the NASCAR circuit. He could be an almost automatic bet very soon to finish in the Top 3 every week. Gordon is heating up and soon should be a tough bet against on the racetrack.

3. Matt Kenseth – - Kenseth did okay in the Kobalt Tools 500 when finishing 12th, but it’s obvious that he isn’t driving as well, nor is his team making decisions as well, as he did in the first two races of the season.

4. Kurt Busch – - Busch makes his debut in the Power Rankings at number four. The victory in the Kobalt Tools 500 comes on the heels of 1 top five finish and 2 top ten finishes. If he keeps it up, Kurt could be a strong contender for the Sprint Cup.

5. Jimmie Johnson – - Jimmie garnered only his 2nd top ten finish of the season in the Kobalt Tools 500, but he hasn’t exactly gotten on track yet. When he and his crew do, everybody knows what’s going to happen. A lot of victories for number 44, that’s what.

6. Carl Edwards – - Carl’s 3rd place finish in the Kobalt might be a sign of things to come as he only has a single other top ten finish on his resume at this point in the season. Edwards should be considered Roush Racing’s top chance at the Sprint Cup. Maybe, the 3rd place finish will convince some racing fans that he is.

7. Tony Stewart – - Smoke got another top ten finish in the Kobalt Tools 500. That makes 3 top ten finishes this season. It’s only a matter of time before Tony the Tiger starts to roar.

8. Clint Bowyer – - Clint got another top ten finish, this time at 6th, to go along with 2 other top ten finishes, and 2 top five finishes. How well is Bowyer driving? Well enough for some to believe that he has a serious shot at the Sprint Cup this year.

9. Kevin Harvick – - Harvick makes his debut in the top ten after finishing in the top five in the Kobalt Tools 500. The top 5 finish is his second of the year. Harvick has been one of the favorites of NASCAR betting fans for a while. Will he continue to move up the rankings and become a real force this season?

10. Brian Vickers – - With his top 5 finish in the Kobalt, Vickers now has a top 5 finish and a top 10 finish this season. He’s also been driving very well by not getting into accidents and at least finishing in the top 20 in most of the races. He’s an up and comer on the circuit.
