NASCAR Picks -JJ is the Favorite in the NASCAR Sportsbook to Win the Coca-Cola 600

June 2, 2010

Four-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson is the NASCAR betting favorite to win this Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600.

He’s not the biggest news of the week, however.

The biggest news of the week involves the second choice in the sportsbook, Kyle Busch, and his teammate on Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin.

I really don’t want to go through the entire incident here since, well, it would take two separate articles to do it, but let’s just say that Busch threatened to “kill” Hamlin after Hamlin pushed him into the wall during last Saturday’s All-Star Race and Hamlin, well, Hamlin basically called Kyle a child.

Hey, coach Gibbs, didn’t Kyle have some sort of beef with Tony Stewart a couple of years ago? Or, was that Hamlin? Either way, coach Gibbs, you’d better get your house in order.

NASCAR: Coca-Cola 600

  • Where: Charlotte Motor Speedway, Charlotte, North Carolina
  • When: May 30th, 2010 at 5:45 pm EST
  • Track: 1.5 miles Quad-oval

Best NASCAR Bet A: Jimmie Johnson +300

Jimmie hasn’t won since Bristol on March 21st. That’s 7 straight point races without a victory. Well, thank goodness for the Coca-Cola 600! JJ’s won 6 times at Charlotte including the first race here in 2009.

He loves this track and should be extremely tough to beat with Joe Gibbs’ babies running each other into the wall and threatening each other over their radios.

This race is JJ’s for the taking.

Best NASCAR Bet B: Jeff Gordon +800

Gordo has won 6 times at Charlotte as well. He’s been driving very well including finishing 11th in the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover on May 16th. 11th place isn’t great but it shows that Gordon is doing well enough to be competitive. Now, he goes to a track that he loves.

One thing to note is that Jeff hasn’t won at Charlotte in 5 straight races although he does have two 4th place finishes in those 5 races. That’s why were getting 8 to 1, right?

Worst NASCAR Bet: Kyle Busch +500

I do believe that Kyle has a shot to win the Coca-Cola 600. I just don’t believe he’s a good bet in the NASCAR sportsbook at the odds of 5 to 1. Not with his teammate, and Gibbs’ top driver, Denny Hamlin, hating on him and the temper issues he’s got.

Oh, there are racing stats to back-up my belief that laying off of Kyle in this race is a wise move. His average finish at Charlotte is 19.0 and he’s never won a Sprint Cup race over the track.

Best Underdog Bet: Mark Martin +2000

Martin has finally ventured up to underdog status in the NASCAR sportsbook! Hip, hip, hooray! I mean, 20 to 1 on Marko? Really? Sure, he’s been worse than awful lately and he’s going to have to start 11th…wait, 11th? That’s awesome! I’m already giddy. It’s the odds, man.

I man, Marko’s won 4 times at Charlotte. Okay, he hasn’t finished better than 9th in 5 straight races at Charlotte but that’s okay. I’ll take the odds.

Others to Consider

  • Denny Hamlin +800 – - He’s driving very well this year and he’s probably going to get over the beef with Kyle before Kyle does.
  • Jeff Burton +1200 – - He missed out on the All-Star Race but he has 3 victories at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
  • Kasey Kahne +1500 – - He, like Burton, has won 3 times at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
  • Juan Pablo Montoya +3000 – - He’s an underdog to be sure, but he finished 8th in the second race at Charlotte in 2009.
  • Kurt Busch +700 – - He’s never won a Sprint Cup Race at Charlotte but he did win last Saturday’s All-Star Race over the track.
  • Greg Biffle +3500 – - No Sprint Cup victories over the track, but he did finish 2nd at one of the races in 2008 and he starts in the second position on Sunday.
