NASCAR Odds to win Subway Fresh Fit 600
April 18, 2010
What will past performances tell us about Phoenix? The race that is now known as the Subway Fresh Fit 600 is one of two Sprint Cup races that are held at the Phoenix International Raceway, the other one being the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500.
The distance is measured in kilometers, which is kind of unusual for a NASCAR race, and the 603-kilometer route will be covered partly under sunlight and partly under the manufactured lights at the speedway.
Having been only a 500-kilometer event in the past, it was extended so that it could finish at night, which is the intention.

There’s not really much history to this race – only five years’ worth, in fact – and as you might expect, Jimmie Johnson is a prominent part of that history. The 48 car took the win in 2008, as his Chevrolet completed the race in just over three hours.
The first Subway Fresh 500 was won in 2005 by Kurt Busch (+700 to win Saturday), who took home $264,000 for his efforts, to date the highest purse ever in the race. Kevin Harvick (+1500 for Saturday), who was until recently the NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader, won in 2006, and Jeff Gordon (+700 for Saturday) won it in 2007.
In last year’s event Mark Martin (+700 to win at Phoenix) stormed home to victory, a much-needed win as he had been 18th in the points coming into the race. He came into race week a bit nervous but won the pole and then took the checkered flag, walking out of Phoenix with a lot more confidence – the kind of confidence that allowed him to go into the Chase for the Cup seeded #1.
Martin has raced 26 times at Phoenix, posting two victories and eleven top-five finishes, so he’s got some good history at PIR. His other win at the track was way back in 1993. Martin also has the most Sprint Cup top tens at this track, with 17. Kurt Busch has not done badly either, with a second, third and sixth place finish in his last three efforts there. Tony Stewart’s teammate Ryan Newman, who is +4000 to win the Subway race, has won the most poles at Phoenix (four).
As far as the fall event goes (now the Checker Auto Parts 500), which could also serve as a barometer for performance here, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won twice (2003, 2004) while Kyle Busch was the victor in 2005. Jimmie Johnson (+400 to win Saturday) has won the fall race in Phoenix in each of the last three years. As usual, everyone measures himself against #48.
NASCAR is a little like the NFL in a way, in that they have certain established starting times for races, but the Subway race does not fit into that. While NASCAR has decreed that the races can only start at 1 PM, 3 PM and 7:30 PM Eastern time, this one will begin at 4:30 PM ET.
