NASCAR Betting – Southern 500 Top Three
May 9, 2009
When it comes to NASCAR, nothing is certain, but some things can be predicted. When it comes to a race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, one of the things that can definitely be predicted is that Kyle Busch will go off the favorite to both win the Southern 500 and to finish in the Top Three.
But after that things get a bit shaky for BetOnline online sportsbook gamblers. Kyle, who’s ranked number one in the NASCAR Power Rankings, deserves betting consideration to finish in the Top Three, but who else?
Let’s analyze the chances of some drivers to finish in the Top Three.
NASCAR: Southern 500 Top Three
1. Jimmie Johnson +180 – - Gamblers shouldn’t write off Jimmie in this race just because he finished 36th last week at Richmond. Jimmie has the second best average finish at Darlington at 7.4 and the driver ahead of him in that category hasn’t nearly the number of races on the track as Jimmie. He’s the bet.
2. Kyle Busch +130 – - Busch’s odds are terrible to finish in the Top Three, but that’s because he’s already put back to back victories together this season and won at Darlington in 2008. Kyle should be tough again and getting above even money on him just to finish in the Top Three might constitute a wager.
3. Jeff Gordon +200 – - Gordon has 16 Top Fives and 7 victories at Darlington. He’ll be ready to run the field into the ground in this after the finish at Richmond last week. That might hurt him. Or, it might help him. Gordon is a good bet at the odds.
4. Denny Hamlin +350 – - Okay, he hasn’t had a lot of starts at Darlington but his average finish of 6.3 is the best in the field. Joe Gibbs’s second stringer could surprise and get into the Top Three at terrific odds.
5. Dale Earnhardt Jr. +600 - – Jr. deserves consideration for a wager because he has finished in the Top Five 3 times, and has an average order of finish of 14.2 at Darlington. More importantly, Jr. had a bad race at Richmond. He usually bounces back. If not to win, then at least to put in a good run.
6. Greg Biffle +250 – - Two victories at Darlington and an average order of finish of 14.8 means that Biffle could get himself into the Top Three on Saturday. He was great at Talladega two weeks ago when finishing 7th and good enough to get into the Top 20 at Richmond.
Best Long Shot
Juan Pablo Montoya +1800 – - Why not? Juan Pablo finished 10th last week at Richmond and has been driving with much more control this year than he ever has before. He’s going to start getting himself into position to win. It could happen on Saturday.
