NASCAR Betting – Junior’s On The Pole And Is +1200 To Win Daytona

February 17, 2011

NASCAR betting fans have noticed that this is almost playing out like a script, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. has captured the pole position and is (in the minds of many) a rather appetizing +1200 to win Sunday’s Daytona 500, which will be televised on Fox.

Kevin Harvick, who finished third in the Sprint Cup standings last year, is listed as the +550 favorite in NASCAR betting, with Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart both at +800.

Daytona 500

Sunday, February 20 — 1 PM ET

Dayton International Speedway

Daytona Beach, FL

Dale Earnhardt Jr. may have been an also-ran in the Sprint Cup derby the last few years, but you had bet better believe that the sport’s most popular driver is going at center stage Sunday for the most prestigious race in NASCAR. Junior has won the pole for the Daytona 500, which will be contested just a couple of days after the tenth anniversary of the tragic accident that took his father’s life at this very same track. And he goes off at +1200 in the NASCAR betting odds to win the race.

Here is a list of the drivers in the field who are at 25/1 or below to win:

NASCAR Betting Odds

To Win Daytona 500

  • Brad Keselowski +2500
  • Carl Edwards +1500
  • Clint Bowyer +1200
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr +1200
  • Denny Hamlin +1200
  • Jamie McMurray +1000
  • Jeff Burton +2500
  • Jeff Gordon +1200
  • Jimmie Johnson +1200
  • Joey Logano +2000
  • Juan Pablo Montoya +2000
  • Kevin Harvick +550
  • Kurt Busch +1500
  • Kyle Busch +800
  • Mark Martin +2000
  • Tony Stewart +800
  • Field (Any Other Driver) +2000

This is the first time that Earnhardt Jr. has won the pole at Daytona, and he’ll only be looking for move up one place from last year, because he was the runner-up to Jamie McMurray in the 2010 race. That would be big news for Kendrick Motorsports, which has two drivers in the front row. Jeff Gordon is starting on the outside and he is currently +1200 in NASCAR betting.

Dale Jr. turned a lap at 186.089 miles an hour and not only took the pole at Daytona for the first time, it was the first time he had won the pole at any restrictor-plate superspeedway.

Last year was another rough one for Earnhardt Jr., as he failed to follow up on his opening Daytona finish. He spent a little time in the top ten, but ultimately came 21st in the Sprint Cup standings, well out of any contention for the Chase.

Junior’s experiences at Daytona have been strong, but they have also been bittersweet. He finished as the runner-up in his second Daytona 500, right behind Michael Waltrip (who will be part of the "Field" at +2000 in NASCAR online betting if he qualifies), and he was one spot ahead of his father at the time of the fatal crash, which took place in the closing moments of the race. He won the big one three years later, and finished third in 2005. There is no doubt the emotions will be flowing on Sunday.

When the Gatorade Duels take place on Thursday, the rest of the lineup will be determined, and at that point there might be some adjustment in the NASCAR betting odds, although I would not look for anything major.
