NASCAR Betting – Busch Brothers, 1-2 in Cup Race, Battle It Out Close to Home

March 6, 2011

Those who engage in NASCAR betting know that there is something of a rivalry between Brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch, who are 1-2 in the Sprint Cup point’s competition. That rivalry continues this week, as the two compete in their hometown of Las Vegas, in the Kobalt Tools 400, scheduled for Sunday at 3 PM ET on FOX. They are paired up in a head-to-head matchup for qualifying (which takes place Friday at 6:30 PM ET), and Kyle is the NASCAR betting favorite at -120, with Kurt at -110.

Qualifying Matchup

KYLE BUSCH  -120

KURT BUSCH  -110

Kyle Busch, the -120 NASCAR betting favorite in this matchup, has raced seven Sprint Cup events at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and on three different occasions he has finished in the top three. In 2009 he won the pole and won the race, and you know it was going to happen sooner or later, as he grew up not far from the site. He failed at Daytona, though he came eighth, and his second-place at the Subway Fresh Fit 500 helped vault him into the #1 position in the Sprint Cup points standings. He lost by quite a margin to Jeff Gordon, but NASCAR bettors know that he almost duplicated his feat of winning races in all three series in one weekend, as he scored triumphs in the Truck Series and Nationwide races prior to that.

Kyle’s best finish thus far has been fifth place in the Sprint Cup in 2007. That was at the age of 22. A lot of people forget that he is still only 25 years old, but everyone knows that he is Kurt Busch’s little brother.

Kurt, who is +1200 to win the Kobalt Tools 400 in NASCAR betting this week, has surprisingly not done that well at Las Vegas, and you’d figure him for something a little more impressive. In ten starts at this venue, he has finished in the top ten only twice. And in the last four races he finished there, he was 16th, 26th, 23rd and 35th. He has put together solid efforts thus far, as he was fifth in the Daytona 500 and eighth last week at Phoenix. And wouldn’t you know it – he is second in the standings, only to his brother. He has something his brother doesn’t have, however – a Sprint Cup championship, and he is +1000 in the latest NASCAR betting futures to win another one this year. .

Despite his relative lack of success at Las Vegas, if there is something Kurt Busch knows how to do, it is qualify at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In fact, in those ten starts he has NEVER started out of the top ten. His average start, in fact, is 5.2, and his last two years of qualifying have been sizzling – second position in 2009 and on the pole last year, when he finished 35th.

So we don’t know how things are going to turn out in the end for Kurt Busch, but we have a pretty good idea of how they’re going to start. We’ll take the underdog in the NASCAR betting odds in this matchup.

JAY’S PLAY:  KURT BUSCH (-110) ***
(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
