Mother Nature Wreaking Havoc on Nation, How Will Weather Affect Super Bowl Preparations?

February 1, 2011

I know it’s a nearly unpredictable scenario that nobody expected, but BetOnline Super Bowl 45 betting enthusiasts should know that this week’s massive, nation-wide arctic storm is already having an effect on the participants of this year’s championship title tilt, even if it’s not quite as bad as it would be were this game being played outdoors – or on the East Coast for that matter.

The storm, which began in earnest earlier today, is expected to dump more than a foot of snow on much of the Midwest while also delivering freezing rain, sleet, brutal winds and at least light snow to the Dallas area for the next several days.

The estimated 150,000 fans and media traveling to Dallas for Sunday’s Super Bowl 45 showdown will have to deal with bone-chilling cold and extreme wintry conditions throughout the course of the week.

Today’s low temperature is supposed to be 14 degrees while Wednesday’s high is predicted at 22 degrees, with a low of 15.

Thursday’s numbers (31 and 21) aren’t much more encouraging and the Dallas wind-chill factor will drop below zero at some point tonight and tomorrow at the least.

"Ice, sleet, snow and really slick [roads]. People are not used to it," Bill Lively, President and CEO of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee, told WFAA-TV.

Now, while game day won’t be very bad for the players as NFL officials had decided to close the roof at Cowboys Stadium well before the start of this winter storm, the practice schedules for both teams will undoubtedly be affected, even if slightly so.

Neither team begins practicing before Wednesday, with Tuesday saved for interviews with the mass of international media members.

According to NFL.com, the Packers have moved their Super Bowl practice sessions indoors to a nearby high school after originally scheduling their drills for outdoors at Southern Methodist University in downtown Dallas.

The Web site also said the Pittsburgh Steelers have opted to move their workouts to the indoor facilities at Highland Park High School in Dallas after initially planning to practice indoors at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Now, while the field and temperature inside Cowboys Stadium will be absolutely ideal for Sunday’s Super Bowl 45 matchup, the changes in venue for each team’s practice sessions could undoubtedly have a hand, no matter how small, in the outcome of this year’s championship title tilt in the BetOnline Football Sportsbook.
