Monday Night Football Odds – Ravens vs Jets

September 11, 2010

The first Monday Night Football game of the 2010 NFL season begins with what could be an AFC championship preview. The Baltimore Ravens travel to the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey to take on the New York Jets. The Ravens and the Jets are expected to win their respective divisions and this game, more than many week one games, has deeper implications to the season.

The Monday Night Football Odds have the New York Jets as the -2½-point favorites and a bet on the underdog Ravens to win the game straight up will pay bettors +115 on the moneyline.

The New York Jets season has all the makings of an NFL films classic. First, they are the stars of the 2010 Hard Knocks series, which by all accounts has been the greatest year of the series and in a dramatic turn, holdout pro-bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis signs a contract on shows final episode.  I’m a bit of a sports conspiracy theorist but it all seems too convenient that Revis signed on the final day of Hard Knocks, was it a set up? I’m not sure but whether it was or wasn’t the Jets won’t have the benefits of a pseudo scripted reality show when the game kicks off Monday night.

The Jets made it to the AFC championship game last season after they snuck into the playoffs by beating the Colts and the Bengals who fielded their practice squads for 6 quarters of the games. To their credit, they shut down the Chargers and their MNF opponents the Ravens to earn their place in the AFC title game.

This season, they have added several high-profile pieces to the team, running back LaDanian Tomlinson will back up Shonn Greene, and former all-pro linebacker Jason Taylor joins the defense along with Antonio Cromartie who will play opposite of Darrelle Revis.

The Jets have Mark Sanchez under center but Sanchez has had a poor preseason and if we look at the numbers last season, if Sanchez doesn’t take care of the ball, the Jets lose.

The Ravens have one goal in their mind and that’s a Super Bowl win. The defense is solid as always and this year they have a chip on their shoulder as the media is fawning over the Jets and the Ravens are feeling disrespected, a disrespected Ray Lewis and co. is a scary thought.  Here’s Lewis talking about the Revis signing, "I’m just glad he is signed, so there is no excuses," Lewis said. "Don’t come and say, ‘Oh, we didn’t have Revis.’ Have everybody (you) need to have. Whoever (you) need to go sign … stack your deck and let’s go play football." He continues, "We’re talking about the Jets like we’re talking about the Saints…Those are the only people that can be dethroned, Drew Brees and the Saints, not Mark Sanchez and the Jets."

The Ravens made some solid upgrades to their offense by adding Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh at wide receiver. The two will give Joe Flacco his best targets in his 3 years with the Ravens. Derrick Mason is still around and the WR trio will break through against the Jets pass defense. Speaking of trios, the Ravens running back trio of Ray Rice, Willis McGahee and Le’Ron McClain give the Ravens three unique looks from the backfield and the Jets much vaunted defense will be pushed to the limit against the Ravens offense.

The Jets have too much hype coming into this season and with the Ravens offense now on par or even a touch better than their defense, Baltimore will be a force all year long. Take the Ravens on the moneyline.

NFL Betting Pick: Baltimore Ravens + 115
