Monday Night Football Odds – Pride and Last Place on the Line when San Fran Heads to Arizona

November 27, 2010

Monday Night Football Odds is that there hasn’t been a matchup of two worse teams in a worse division on a Monday night in quite some time. The 49ers, fresh off a shutout loss at home head to Arizona to take on a Cardinals team that was embarrassed in their last game as well.

The San Francisco 49ers were the sexy preseason pick to win the NFL West but underwhelming play, injuries and maybe overenthusiastic expectations have sunk this team. Still mathematically alive in the division, Monday Night Football odds are that the 49ers are playing for pride alone on a National stage.

The 49ers appear to have abandoned the idea that Alex Smith is their quarterback of the future. Troy Smith will lead the league’s 19th ranked passing game into action on Monday night. Michael Crabtree and Vernon David have to be better – they are elite talents that have disappeared in recent weeks.

The San Francisco running game ranks a surprising 25th in the NFL with an average of just 95.8 yards per game. It’s true – look it up! Frank Gore has gotten his numbers in the passing game but he certainly isn’t getting them on the ground!

Mike Singletary’s defensive mind also appears to be lost on the 49ers at the moment. At present, they rank 17th versus the pass (221.40 yards per game) and 15th versus the run (106.8 yards per game) This unit gave up 162 yards to the Bucs on the ground last week at home – not good!

The Arizona Cardinals are a mess as well. Monday Night Football Odds are that outside of the Dallas Cowboys, the Cards, and the 49ers for that matter are the biggest underachievers in the NFL. The Cards are bad on offense and bad on defense – Come back Kurt Warner and Karlos Dansby – please!!!

I guess you can’t expect much from a team that relies on Derek Anderson. He and the Cards presently own the NFL’s 28th ranked passing offense (with Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston) and the 28th ranked running game (with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower).

The offensive line has been brutal and is responsible for the second most sacks given up in the league this year (35).

The Arizona defense isn’t much better. They rank 27th against the pass and 28th versus the run. This unit has given up 30 or more points in five of their 10 games this season.

Monday Night Football Odds Outlook:

The San Francisco 49ers are 3-7 SU and ATS this season and are 1-10 SU in their last 11 games on the road. The 49ers are 2-4 ATS in their last six games and are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games on the road. However, San Francisco is 4-2 SU in their last six games against Arizona.

The Arizona Cardinals are 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last five games. They are 6-3 SU in their last nine games at home but are just 2-4 ATS in their last six at home. The Cards are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six versus the 49ers and are 1-5 ATS at home versus San Francisco.

The Arizona Cardinals are an OK home team and the 49ers are a dreadful road team. The 49ers will stick with Troy Smith at quarterback even though he and the offense totaled 189 yards last week against Tampa Bay.

I don’t like the 49ers and I don’t like the Cards. But I don’t like the Cards a little bit more – make any sense?

Monday Night Football Betting Odds Pick: Arizona Cardinals
