MLB Picks – San Francisco Faces Philadelphia
April 27, 2010
The Philadelphia Phillies face the San Francisco Giants in the 2nd of a 3 game series on Tuesday night and look at this surprise!
The G-Men and the Phillies have the same exact 11 and 8 record. After starting out the season hot, where they won 8 out of their first 10 games, the Phillies have since gone 3 and 6 overall. This includes losing 3-game series to Florida and Arizona. They are in danger of losing another game to San Francisco after the G-Men drubbed Philadelphia’s ace, Roy Halladay, on Monday night. It was Halladay’s first loss.
San Francisco looks to hang another “L” onto the heads of the Phillies when they send pitcher Todd Wellemeyer to the mound. Wellemeyer has struggled throughout this entire season. He’s 0 and 3 for an 8.16 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP.
Jamie Moyer, on the other hand, is proving that age really doesn’t mean anything. Moyer is 2 and 1 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Moyer has been much better in 2010 than most MLB betting fans expected him to be.
Because of that, Moyer is a baseball bet favorite in the sportsbook for tonight’s game.
Philadelphia Phillies
Jamie Moyer – L -1 ½ +125 -130 O 9 ½ -105
San Francisco Giants
Todd Wellemeyer – R +1 ½ -145 +110 U 9 ½ -115
The trends point to Moyer and the Phillies in this game.
The Philadelphia Phillies are 8 and 1 in Moyers last 9 starts as a favorite on the road.
The Philadelphia Phillies are 14 and 3 in Moyers last 17 starts when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in their previous game.
The San Francisco Giants are 4 and 1 in their last 5 games at home.
The San Francisco Giants are 7 and 1 in their last 7 home games versus a team with a winning record.
Most baseball betting fans feel that the game sets up for Moyer and the Phillies. It’s hard to look past how well Moyer has been pitching and how badly Wellemeyer has been pitching, but Wellemeyer has ever right to get over his bad starts and do well in this game.
After all, Jamie Moyer did in his 3rd start of the season and this will be Wellemeyer’s 4th start of the season. Moyer gave up 9 hits and 5 runs and 6 hits and 5 runs in only 12 innings of work to start out 2010 before giving up only 4 hits and 2 runs against the Atlanta Braves in his last start.
Because of his age, it’s unlikely that Moyer will be able to go past 6 innings in this game and the G-Men just got to Philadelphia’s ace, Roy Halladay, on Monday night. While most gamblers see Wellemeyer facing the Phillies as a chance for Philadelphia to get back onto the winning track, I see it as a chance for Wellemeyer to come up with the type of game he’s capable of producing.
Wellemeyer’s never been good against the Phillies, Ryan Howard is 4 for 7 against him lifetime, but Wellemeyer has a liftetime ERA of 4.83, tons of pride, and a hot team backing him up. Those are all great ingredients to turnaround a terrible trend.
I’ll back him to, or, I should say, I will back the San Francisco Giants at above even money baseball odds.
Pick: San Francisco Giants +110
