Marlins Turn To Volstad To Extend Winning Streak Against Cubs

The Florida Marlins (13-8 SU, 12-9 RL, 12-9 O/U) will be trying to extend their modest two-game winning streak in the BetOnline Sportsbook when they visit the Chicago Cubs (10-10 SU, 9-11 RL, 11-7-2 O/U) tonight at Wrigley Field at 8 PM ET.

The Marlins are coming off a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Wednesday, rallying for two runs in the eighth inning to take the series finale as +165 underdogs.

Cody Ross drove in two runs to lead the Marlins while the game’s seven total runs played Under the posted over/under total in the BetOnline Sportsbook (7.5).

The Cubs were routed by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, getting shut out 10-0 as -115 favorites while the game’s 10 combined runs played Over the posted O/U total (9.5).

Tonight, the Marlins will hand the ball to right-hander Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.70 ERA) who looks to keep his perfect record intact while the Cubs counter with lefthander Sean Marshall (0-1, 4.91 ERA) who is still seeking his first victory of the season.

Volstad hasn’t received a decision in his last two outings after winning his first two starts but limited Philadelphia to three runs in seven innings of Sunday’s 6-4 10-inning loss.

Marshall allowed three runs in six innings in an 8-2 loss to St. Louis on Saturday.

Here is a look at tonight’s key MLB betting trends, followed by my in-depth analysis and MLB Free Pick.

The Marlins are 6-1 in their last 7 games as a road underdog.

The Marlins are 8-2 in their last 10 games as an underdog.

The Cubs are 5-1 in their last 6 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.

The Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.

The Marlins are 13-4 in the last 17 meetings.

The Marlins are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Chicago.

The Over is 19-9 in the last 28 meetings.

MLB Odds

Florida Marlins +1½ -195

Chris Volstad –R Ev

Chicago Cubs -1½ +165

Sean Marshall –L -120

Over 9½ -105

Under 9½ -115

Analysis: This pick is pretty simple with Florida possessing the better starting pitcher in this contest. Chicago’s Sean Marshall has allowed three earned runs in each of his last two starts while Florida’s Chris Volstad has been pretty darned solid in all four of his starts this season.

I like the feisty Florida Marlins to cover the Run Line tonight while pushing the Cubbies for the outright win.

I also like the Over to play out in this contest as Chicago has played Over their set O/U totals in four consecutive games and Florida, in five of their last seven games overall.

MLB Free Picks: Florida +1½ Runs/Over 9½ Total Runs
