MLB Odds – Red Sox Host Angels

May 3, 2011

In a great match-up of ace pitchers, the surging Boston Red Sox host the Los Angeles Angels tonight in prime-time MLB action.

After winning the first game of the four-game series, Boston is favored in the MLB odds to win again tonight, with the run total set at seven runs.

Los Angeles Angels (16-13) vs. Boston Red Sox (13-15)

Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

Tuesday, May 3 at 7:10 PM ET

TV: FSW, NESN

MLB Odds: Los Angeles +1.5, Boston -1.5, Game Total: 7 runs

The Red Sox have won five games over Los Angeles this season, and the Angels look to get a win behind the strong arm of Dan Haren. With an ERA of 1.28 and 35 strike-outs on the season, Haren is the best bet for the Angels team to get a win over the hard-hitting Red Sox. Boston has hit 21 homers against the Angles in the team’s last 15 match-ups.

But this will be Haren’s second outing against Boston this season. In the first game, he gave up four runs in six innings for the loss. In that same game, Haren was opposed on the mound by Jon Lester, the same Red Sox player taking the stripe tonight. Lester will be aiming for his fourth consecutive win, averaging a stellar ERA of 1.35 in his last three wins.

MLB Pitching Matchup:

D. Haren (4-1, ERA 1.23) vs. J. Lester (3-1, ERA 2.52)

With a .64 ERA, Lester has won his last two starts against the Angels, while garnering 13 strike-outs. But Haren is the American League ERA leader, at 1.23, and is a solid pitcher that can be relied on in tough meetings like tonight. But at Fenway, Haren is 1-4 with a 3.81 ERA.

Boston’s David Ortiz has been hot against the Angels as of late, hitting at .381. Jacoby Ellsbury, amid a 11-game hitting streak, may not play tonight after he suffered a bruised knee in last night’s game.

The Angels are hitting at .200 against Boston this season, and will need an offensive spark to win tonight at Fenway. The best bet in the MLB odds is with the Boston Red Sox at home.
