MLB Odds – Mets Look for Third Straight Victory Over Cubs on Wednesday Night

April 22, 2010

The New York Mets strive for their third victory in a row, this time as an even baseball bet in the MLB sportsbook, on Wednesday night when they battle the Chicago Cubs again. New York has allowed Chicago to score only 1 run in their 2 victories against the Cubs so far during this series. The Mets’ pitchers were excellent again on Tuesday night as Mike Pelfrey held Chicago to only 3 hits in 7 innings on Tuesday night.

New York sends another hot pitcher, Oliver Perez, to the mound on Wednesday. Perez has held the batters that he has faced to a .190 averages and no homeruns in 12 innings of work. His ERA, however, of 3.75 and WHIP of 1.25 might not be good enough for the Mets to keep their win streak going.

The reason is because the Cubs’ Carlos Silva, who takes the mound for Chicago on Wednesday, has been brilliant in 2010. Silva is 1 and 0 with a .69 ERA and a .62 WHIP. In 13 innings he’s allowed only 8 hits for a .174 batting average. Silva is starting to prove that he’s worth the $12.25 million contract he signed in 2009.

Game-night: 4/21/2010
First-pitch: 7:10 pm EST

Below are the baseball odds for this game.

Chicago Cubs
Carlos Silva – R -1 ½ +155 -110 O 8 ½ -120

New York Mets
Oliver Perez – L +1 ½ -175 -110 U 8 ½ Ev

The trends point to New York winning their third in a row.

The New York Mets are 5 and 1 in Oliver Perez’s last 6 starts as an underdog at home.

The New York Mets are 4 and 1 in Oliver Perez’s last 5 home starts with the total set at 7 to 8 ½.

The Chicago Cubs are 0 and 4 in their last 4 games on grass.

The Chicago Cubs are 1 and 5 in their last 6 games versus a team from the National League East Division.

Although both pitchers have been doing very well so far in 2010, they haven’t been all that great historically in a Mets vs. Cubs match-up.

Silva has faced the Mets 16 times in his career for an 8.84 ERA. Perez hasn’t beaten Chicago since 2003. In 6 starts since then, he’s 0 and 3 for a 6.39 ERA.

In this match-up, even though the trends tell me otherwise, I’m inclined to go with Silva and the Cubs. Silva has been brilliant lately and the Cubs have responded to him in both games. They produced 4 runs for Silva in a 5 to 4 loss (which wasn’t his fault) to Cincinnati on April 9th. Then, on April 6th, the Cubbies produced 7 runs for Silva in a 7 to 2 victory over the Houston Astros.

The Cubs will need to produce runs because they haven’t scored more than a single run in 2 games so far during this 4 game series. They’ve been outscored 10 to 1.

I believe that the Cubbies get their bats going in this game against Perez whose ERA, although great, doesn’t compare to Silva’s. With a pitcher on the mound that Chicago batters have amazing confidence in, the runs should come easier on Wednesday night then they have the past 2 nights.

Chicago suffered their 4th straight loss yesterday. I don’t believe that they suffer a 5th straight loss on Wednesday night.

My baseball bet is on Chicago to beat the Mets on Wednesday.
