MLB Odds – Baltimore Worth a Shot as the Baseball Bet Underodg Versus the Giants?

June 15, 2010

Things are so bad for the Baltimore Orioles that the San Francisco Giants are -155 favorites in the baseball betting sportsbook to beat them even though the man the G-Men send to the mound is making his first start of the season.

Joe Martinez takes the call tonight against Baltimore after going 5 and 2 with a 3.07 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Fresno.  Martinez started 5 games for the San Francisco Giants last season.  He went 3 and 2 with a 7.50 ERA.

Now, he will be counted on to hand the Baltimore Orioles their 10th straight road loss.  Martinez’s overall effectiveness in tonight’s game has to be questioned given his performance last season.  What it means is that the Orioles might actually be a decent underdog MLB bet to make in the sportsbook.

MLB Betting Odds

Baltimore Orioles
Jake Arrieta – R                      +135

San Francisco Giants
Joe Martinez – R                     -155

The baseball betting trends definitely favor the Giants in this game.

The San Francisco Giants are 5 and 1 in their last 6 games following a win.

The San Francisco Giants are 7 and 0 in their last 7 interleague games at home.

The Baltimore Orioles are 1 and 6 in their last 7 interleague games on the road.

The Baltimore Orioles are 0 and 4 in their last 4 interleague games as the underdog.
There doesn’t appear to be a lot to like about the Orioles in this game.  After looking deeper, however, there is a sliver of hope for the much maligned O’s.  Their starting pitcher, Jake Arrieta, made a fantastic showing in his first foray to the mound in 2010.

Arrieta pitched a solid 6 innings in his first start in the Majors.  He allowed only 4 hits and 3 runs for a 4.50 ERA.  He walked 4 and struck out 6.  The numbers themselves aren’t overly impressive.  What is impressive is that Arrieta racked up those numbers against the New York Yankees.

The Yankees are ranked number one in MLB in runs, 5.55 per game, and batting average, 2.80.  They’re ranked 7th in home runs with 70 on the season yet Arrieta found a way to provide 6 solid innings of work when facing the Yankees for the first time.  His solid work led to a 4 to 3 Baltimore victory.

Although San Francisco’s offense has been better lately, it’s still not as good as the Yankees’ offense.  The G-Men average 4.37 runs per game. Their batting average is .267.  Arrieta could actually pitch better in tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants then he did against the New York Yankees.

With the likelihood of Arrieta pitching better in tonight’s game, and the questions surrounding Martinez’s first start in MLB in 2010, this game might be a good one in which to take the underdog.

That’s the team that I will be backing in this game.  I’m going for the money!  I’m making a baseball bet on the Baltimore Orioles to beat the San Francisco Giants tonight.

MLB Sportsbook Pick:  Baltimore Orioles +155
