MLB Odds – Worst Money Burning Pitchers in Baseball

May 6, 2010

For every pitcher that earns a win for his team, there has to be one to lose as well. Here at BetOnline Sportsbook, we’re looking for every angle that we can take to give you an edge against the MLB odds. Here is a look at the five pitchers that have cost baseball bettors the most coin this year.

Jeremy Guthrie, Baltimore Orioles (0-6, -$600) - If Guthrie had a team around him, he clearly wouldn’t be in this spot right now. His 4.78 ERA for the year is significantly better than many pitchers that are making money hand over fist for their MLB betting fans. However, Guthrie can sue for lack of support, as his team hasn’t put more than three runs on the board for him all season long. We’d like to think that Guthrie’s luck might change, but after all, he’s still a Baltimore Oriole.

Joe Saunders, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (1-5, -$541) – No matter who you are, if you’re a Halo, you’re struggling right now. Anaheim had the unfortunate and predictable inflated odds by the linesmakers at the start of the year, and Saunders is really the biggest one paying for it. Yes, a 7.04 ERA is absolutely ridiculous, and allowing seven runs in four frames against the Red Sox on Monday won’t cut it on a regular basis, but Saunders has pitched significantly better than his 1-5 record indicates. His bullpen has allowed a whopping 22 runs in his starts this year.

Kenshin Kawakami, Atlanta Braves (0-5, -$536) – It may be time for Kawakami to head back to the bullpen. The right-hander has allowed at least three runs in all five of his starts this year, yet he hasn’t survived past the sixth inning in any of those outings. Striking out just 2.2 batters per start won’t cut it either. Atlanta’s lack of run support isn’t helping him any, but Kawakami needs to pitch significantly better before we could even remotely consider backing him.

Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals (1-5, -$512) – Speaking of wanting to sue for lack of support… What about Greinke? The AL Cy Young Award winner has a 2.27 ERA, has struck out 33 guys in 39.2 innings against just seven walks, is only allowing opposing batters to hit .212 against him, and just threw a complete game in 87 pitches. Yet, he’s 0-3! The wins will start coming again for Greinke in due time, so don’t expect him to be on this list forever.

Felipe Paulino, Houston Astros (0-5, -$511) - It should come as no surprise that a Houston Astros pitcher made it to this list. The ‘Stros have been simply woeful all season long, winning just nine games. Paulino has been remarkably consistent, throwing somewhere between 5.0 and 6.0 innings in each of his L/10 starts. The bad news, though? Houston is just 1-9 in those ten. A 5.53 ERA and a 23/18 K/BB ratio aren’t going to cut in when you’re pitching on a team that is only averaging 2.85 runs per game.
