MLB Odds – Very Inviting NL Visitors

October 5, 2010

Trying to take care of business on the road is the most difficult thing a baseball team could do. Take a look at which teams beat the MLB odds on the road in the NL this year.

San Francisco Giants (43-38, +$809) – The Giants didn’t do what they needed to do at home until the final day of the regular season, but they really did pick up the slack on the road, posting the second best road record in the National League against the MLB odds, behind only the San Diego Padres. A road series hasn’t been lost since the middle of August, and that includes some horrifying trips. Three out of four were taken at Petco Park, while two out of three were taken against the Colorado Rockies to effectively put away both of their NL West rivals.

Cincinnati Reds (42-39, +$679) – The Reds really could have folded up shop about two months ago when they were swept at home by the St. Louis Cardinals and about to embark on a long road trip. Instead, that’s when things really kicked into gear, and Cincinnati ran away from the rest of the division. The oddsmakers really undervalued the Reds all season long, and that looks as though it will continue with the MLB odds in the playoffs as well. However, when you’re talking about potentially just two road games, you need to make the most of them in the second season.

Philadelphia Phillies (45-36, +$630) – It has been over two months since the Phils lost a road series, and many of the series that they had to face came in division and against playoff contenders. The Marlins, Padres, Dodgers, Rockies, Mets, Marlins again, Nats again, and Braves all fell victim to the men from the City of Brotherly Love from the beginning of August forward, and the end result saw a team that started off the season as an atrocious road team finishing up as one of the strongest against the MLB odds for the entire season. Needless to say, for as well as this team has played at home, a road win against the Reds could almost certainly lock up a spot in the NLCS once again.

Atlanta Braves (35-46, -$1,569) – Not only were the Braves the worst of the eight teams in the playoffs on the road, but they had a worse road record than virtually everyone in the National League in terms of the MLB odds. It’s amazing that a team that only won 35 games away from its home turf was able to make the playoffs, and it wasn’t always easy either. Losing a ton of players to injury and using a cut and paste bullpen cost Bobby Cox a lot of games. However, with the playoffs here, anything can happen, but no team needs a turnaround on the road like the Braves.
