MLB Monday – Tigers vs Angels

April 19, 2010

Coming off a three game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Angels are just starting to look like the AL West juggernaut that we’ve seen over the past decade. Will they be able to keep things rolling, as they welcome Detroit to town in Monday night’s baseball betting action?

Detroit Tigers (7-5 SU, 5-7 R/L, 7-5 O/U) at Los Angeles Angels (6-7 SU, 5-8 R/L, 5-7-1 O/U)

Monday, April 19: 10:05 p.m.

Betting Odds:

Detroit: +1 ½, -130, +155
(Dontrelle Willis-L)

Anaheim: -1 ½, +110, -175
(Joel Pineiro-R)

Total Runs:

Over 9 ½: -115
Under 9 ½: -105

Detroit comes into this game off a disappointing weekend in Seattle, where they lost two of three to the struggling Mariners. They scored just seven runs in the three games, and offense is definitely an issue as they head to Anaheim.

Just about the only guy hitting for Detroit is their superstar slugger Miguel Cabrera. The 27-year-old Cabrera has been phenomenal in 2010, as he is hitting .370 with three home runs and 14 RBI. However, beyond him, few have been able to provide depth in this Detroit lineup, as veterans like Carlos Guillen and Johnny Damon are off to slow starts. Rookie Austin Jackson is hitting .340 however in his 11 starts.

On Monday, Detroit will send embattled left hander Dontrelle Willis to the mound, in hopes of stopping the bleeding. Willis is a former All-Star who has struggled since coming to the American League Central two years ago. He has two no decisions in two starts this season, with an ERA of 4.91. An important note is that in each of Willis’ starts the run total has gone OVER.

As for Anaheim, they’ll counter in Monday night’s betting action by sending Joel Pineiro to the mound. Piniero is a baseball vagabond in the truest sense of the word, as Anaheim is his fourth big league stop in the last five years, splitting time between both the starting rotation and the bullpen. He has been excellent so far this season however, giving up just four earned runs in 13 innings of work.

With a hot Pineiro on the mound, and a shaky Willis opposing the Angels, make Anaheim your Monday night bet.

The Angles offense is just starting to heat up, as they scored 16 runs in the three game weekend sweep of Toronto over the weekend. And although they lost several starters in the off-season, Anaheim’s replacements are stepping up admirably, as four regulars are hitting at least .300. Former Yankee Hideki Matsui is hitting .327 primarily as the DH, and second baseman Howie Kendrick is just starting to show the form that made him a top prospect several years ago. He is hitting .311 on the season, and is coming off a five hit series against Toronto.

With the combination of solid starting pitching, and a deep and explosive offensive lineup, make Anaheim your bet in a high scoring game Monday night.

We knew the Angels would get hot, and that’s exactly what they are right now. That will continue against Detroit.

Aaron’s Pick: Anaheim -175, OVER 9 ½
