MLB Betting Trends – Bet the Under on these teams
May 17, 2010
BetOnline Sportsbook looks at how the MLB odds have played out for low scoring teams this season. Check out why the Pads and Yanks were in line cashing plenty of ‘unders’ this past week!
Season Standings
1: San Diego Padres (22-11-4) – San Diego’s Petco Park has just been a house of horrors for ‘over’ bettors over the course of this season. The MLB odds almost always feature incredibly low ‘totals’, but it never really seems to matter. Surprisingly though, a 7-10-2 home record for ‘over’ bettors is trumped by a 4-12-2 mark away from home. The Pads have the best staff ERA in baseball at 2.69, which is why they’re still hanging onto 1st place in the NL West.
2: St. Louis Cardinals (24-13-1) – A lousy stretch of seven games has really started to put a dent in St. Louis’ over/under record on the season, and it has raised its staff ERA up to 2.91 and its WHIP up to 1.20. However, it’s pretty clear that manager Tony LaRussa has to be thrilled with numbers like that. Pitching wins championships, and it’ll bring you to the playoffs as well. Just ask Milwaukee, who is still back towards the gutter in the NL Central, while the Redbirds are just a half game out of first.
3: Houston Astros (22-12-3) – It’s not often that you see a "6" thrown on the board as a ‘total’ in an MLB betting affair, but that’s what happened this week when the ‘Stros faced the Giants. A 2-1 final score was easily an ‘under’ result. A surprising three-game sweep in St. Louis at the beginning of the week saw 19 runs cross the plate. That "brings up" Houston’s run production to 2.97 runs per game.
Who’s Hot?
1: New York Yankees (6-1) – It was pretty clear over the weekend that the Yankees were setting up their roster just the way that they wanted it for the series that are coming up against the Red Sox, Rays, and Mets next week. The offense was surprisingly shut out twice against the Tigers at the outset of the week, and the staff pitched a shutout as well. New York’s ‘under’ bettors are at least inching closer towards even again, as 19-17-1 towards the ‘over’ still isn’t good enough.
2: San Diego Padres (5-0-1) – Will someone please figure out what happened to the San Diego offense? Amazingly, the Pads haven’t scored more than five runs over their L/8 games, yet their pitching staff has been good enough to give them a .500 record in the process. ‘Under’ bettors are now 8-0-1 in San Diego’s L/9 overall.
3: Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1) – The trip to Petco Park went well for the Dodgers this week, as they put aside their normal high-flying ways and earned a series sweep in spite of the fact that they only scored nine runs. That’s seven straight games without giving up more than three runs, which is LA’s longest such stretch of the young season.
