MLB Betting Trends – Best Over Teams

May 17, 2010

The third week in May is now complete, and here at BetOnline Sportsbook, we’re going to try to help you out with your MLB picks. Today, we’ll see who joins the D’Backs and Brewers as the top ‘over’ clubs in the game.

Season Standings

1: Arizona Diamondbacks (25-12-1) – The D’Backs just continue to give up runs left and right. Over the L/8 games, they’ve allowed at least six in seven of them. To no one’s surprise, they’re only 1-7 in those eight games, and yes, that one win was the one in which they only allowed one run against the Braves. The staff has a 5.80 ERA on the season, which is just an inexcusably bad number. Scoring 5.11 runs per game is going to waste on a regular basis.

2: Milwaukee Brewers (23-11-3) – Here’s another case where a team just has way too high of a team ERA, but is producing runs left and right. The Brew Crew are putting together just under 5.5 runs every time that they touch the field, but their starters seemingly all have ERAs greater than 4.00. LHP David Bush is 4.24, LHP Randy Wolf is 4.66, LHP Chris Narveson is 5.29, RHP Jeff Suppan is 6.20, and RHP Doug Davis is 7.56. Only RHP Yovani Gallardo is worthwhile.

3: Los Angeles Dodgers (21-16) – Bad news hit Dodgers bettors in a hard way this weekend when RF Andre Ethier broke a bone in his pinkie finger. The slugger has 11 dongs this year and is batting .392, but who knows how much time he is going to miss at this point? Things are starting to calm down in terms of offensive production for the boys in blue, as they only scored nine runs in their three game set at Petco Park this past weekend.

Who’s Hot?

1: Atlanta Braves (6-0) – Gee, thanks Arizona and Milwaukee! In six games against the D’Backs and Brewers this week, the Braves plated a total of 48 runs and went 5-1 SU. The offense is still only averaging 4.57 runs per game though, which is why the Braves are just barely a .500 over/under team on the season. Watch out for your MLB picks in the future with Atlanta if you plan on backing ‘overs’.

2: Milwaukee Brewers (5-1) – When you give up run totals of 8, 11, 9, 9, and 10 in consecutive days, you’re not going to win many games, and you’re going to have a lot of ‘over’ bettors thrilled with you. That’s what Milwaukee was from the point that it started its series with Atlanta on Monday.

3: Philadelphia Phillies (3-2) – For a team that has been a fairly even team as far as ‘totals’ are concerned, the Phils putting together a nice ‘over’ week is a bit surprising. However, as has been the case with the Braves and several other teams, you tend to have a few more high scoring affairs when you play the Brewers in a week. Philadelphia’s potent lineup, even without SS Jimmy Rollins, is still scoring almost 5.5 runs per game.
