MLB Betting Picks – San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies
April 9, 2010
One of the best, and most unique, home field advantages in all of baseball will begin yet again for the 2010 MLB betting season as the Rockies return home after a rough start against the Brewers. After going a stiff 51-30 SU at Coors Field, the Rockies busted in to the NL Wild Card last year. To see the post season once again, they’ll have to continue playing well at their home field.
Offense and pitching weren’t the problem against Milwaukee. In fact, it was tactical defensive errors that led to the Rockies giving up a total of 15 runs in three games against the Brewers. It’s the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t be too worried about it, and playing in front of a home crowd on your own grass tends to add a certain level of comfort to the players.
Jorge De La Rosa looks to continue on a marvelous 2009 campaign which saw him go 16-9 SU with an overall ERA of 4.38. In the second half of last season, De La Rosa went a startling 10-2 SU, losing just one game at home while pitching a 3.46 ERA after the All-Star break. If the Rockies can bolster his heat with better defense, then this is an MLB betting lock considering the home field advantage teams in Denver get naturally.
San Diego Padres (1-2) vs. Colorado Rockies (1-2)
Friday, April 9th — Coors Field — 4:10pm EST
MLB Betting Lines:
Clayton Richard – L +1.5 -130 +160 O 9.5 -105
Jorge De La Rosa – L -1.5 +110 -190 U 9.5 -115
Clayton Richard, another lefty, will get the start for the 1-2 SU San Diego Padres, who were blown apart by the offense of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 26-year old starter will get a chance to prove he was worth trading for after being sent to San Diego from the Chicago White Sox in the Jake Peavy trade from late last summer. Let’s just say that Richard didn’t exactly impress people in Chicago, and he has plenty to prove for the Padres.
Until San Diego shows a semblance of defense, it’s hard to back them. The Rockies, like the D-Backs, boast a lot of solid bats that are going to give the Padres plenty of work to do in the in-field. We don’t have a ton of MLB betting metrics yet, since the season’s so young, but one thing I do like about the Rockies in this one is that they’re 5-2 SU in their home opener. I’d say that’s a streak that you can count on.
Furious free Pick: Rockies RL and ML (UNDER)
