MLB Betting Picks – Mets and Marlins Open Weekend Series

May 13, 2010

When the New York Mets and the Florida Marlins clash to open their MLB betting series this weekend, the Mets will be well aware that they’re just 6-4 SU when facing the fledgling Marlins. As always, Florida’s own isn’t ready to lay down for anyone, and despite the fact that they’re 2-6 SU in their past 8 games at home, they’ll be well aware of the Mets’ woeful road record.

New York hopes that their big money man, Johan Santana, can help turn around their fortunes away from home where they’re just 1-4 SU in their most recent five roadies. In seven games this season, Santana has gone 3-2 SU with 41 hits in 41.2 innings, and 21 runs earned giving him a season ERA of 4.54. You can’t blame Santana, however, for the Mets recent ways.

Run support is everything to a pitcher, especially when you’re a guy like Santana basically getting dinged at least once per inning. The Mets are still without Carlos Beltran, and say what you will about his contract, the fact that his heavy hands aren’t helping in the batting order is certainly causing more damage to the New York Mets odds as an MLB betting pick than it is to opposing pitchers.

New York Mets (18-16) vs. Florida Marlins (16-18)

Thursday, May 13th — Sun Life Stadium — 7:10pm EST

MLB Betting Lines:

Johan Santana – L +1.5 -190 +115 O 7.0 -115
Josh Johnson – R -1.5 -105 -135 U 7.0 -105

Josh Johnson will step to the mound for the Florida Marlins, and the 6-foot-7, 252 pound seams gripper is having a dazzling season. In 43.0 innings, he’s allowed only 34 hits and 16 earned runs against. He’s 3-1 SU in 7 starts personally, and the Marlins are 4-3 SU when he gets the start. At 26-years old, Johnson is entering the peak of his career and when they’re that tall and big, your day will arrive. Whether the Marlins decide to keep him, or trade him for picks like they usually do, remains to be seen.

That’s besides the point right now. As stated before, the Marlins have had a lot of trouble protecting Sun Life Stadium from invaders, but the fact they’re 6-3 SU in their last 9 games means they have a fighting chance to prevail in this one.

Where To Watch: SNY, FSFL

Jason Bay has played admirably in his last handful of games, but talent is spread so thin in the league that one bat doesn’t make a team. The Mets still don’t have a marquee slugger in their lineup to change the tides of games, nor take advantage of pitchers like Santana. That’s why you should back them as your MLB betting pick tonight.
