MLB Betting Odds – Dodgers vs Phillies

September 1, 2010

The Philadelphia Phillies are a schizophrenic team right now; they are in a battle for the AL East and currently leading the National League wildcard race by a game and a half ahead over the San Francisco Giants.

They were swept at home by the Houston Astros and then went to San Diego and won all three against the Padres.

They have the components in place to earn a playoff spot but you never know what you are going to get when the Phillies step on the field.

Tonight they play their second of three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers after dropping game one 3-0, after Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda baffled the Phillies bats with a one hitter.

The MLB Odds have the Dodgers as small -115 moneyline favorites and the comeback on the Phillies is -105. The game total is 8½ runs.

Philadelphia trails the Atlanta Braves by three games, but the way both teams are playing the lead may as well be ten games. The Phillies aren’t coming through when it counts. It will be interesting to see what they can do tonight against the Dodgers.

Tonight the Phillies send Kyle Kendrick to the mound. On the season Kendrick is 8-7 with a 4.64 ERA and like the rest of the staff is tailing off. He’s just 1-3 in his last four starts with a 6.23 ERA.

Despite Kendrick’s struggles, the Phillies pitching hasn’t been the problem; the Phillies bats are just hitting .184. They might have better opportunities against Dodgers rookie right-hander Carlos Monasterios, Monasterios is just 3-4 with a 3.54 ERA.

He’s limited runs in his two starts replacing the injured Vincente Padilla with an ERA of 2.03, but he’s 0-1 and failed to last 5 innings in either start.

The Dodgers are 5½ games back of the Phillies in the Wildcard race but with just a month to go and the San Francisco Giants ahead of them it will be a hard road to hoe. The players remain positive, but as a baseball bettor, I’m not so sure.

Looking at the baseball trends, things look good for the Phillies as they are 7-1 in their last 8 games as a underdog and 5-0 in their last five as a road dog.

If you are betting on the game total the Under looks like a nice bet, the Under is 9-1-1 in the Phillies last 11 road games against a team with a winning record.

Call me a glutton for punishment, but I’m picking the Phillies to win a low scorer over the Dodgers tonight.
