The Rockies are traditionally slow starters and they are holding true to form this season. The year they made the World Series, they won 14 of 15, including their final 11 to earn the playoff berth. This year they are four games back of first place and lack a spark that we’ve grown accustomed to with the Rockies lately. Sure, there are some bright spots, obviously Jimenez and Todd Helton is shaking off his funk by going 12 for 30 in his last nine games.
The player the Rockies need to turn up the intensity is starting to turn it up, Troy Tulowitzki has his average up over .300 again and the power he displayed last season with 32 homeruns is starting to come around. Tulowitzki has hit homeruns in three consecutive games and four in his last five games.
Ubaldo Jimenez has been has been the best pitcher in the major leagues, he has an 8-1 record with a 0.99 ERA and a brilliant 0.93 ERA. He has the chance to become the first pitcher since Bob Tewksbury to start the season with 10 consecutive starts of six or more innings.
The Diamondbacks are at the bottom of the AL West as we all expected. The bright spots for the Diamondbacks have been starter Dan Haren; Haren is a threat to win 18 games no matter what team he’s playing on. The biggest future star on the team is Justin Upton; Upton is only 23 years old but has a nice combination of speed and power that should put him in the 40/40 club sooner rather than later in his career.
It would be silly to bet against Jimenez while he’s pitching so great but -250 is a huge amount to lay just win a unit. The Rockies shouldn’t have trouble scoring runs against Arizona’s starter Rodrigo Lopez, don’t be afraid to take the Rockies on the -1.5 Runline.
