MLB Betting Lines – Can Boston Find Its First Win vs. Yankees?

April 9, 2011

Fenway Park is set to host a three-game series between the two teams of the best rivalry in Major League Baseball.  But the question is, are the Red Sox ready?  Off to an 0-6 start, the club’s worst since 1945, the Red Sox come into this huge series desperately needing a win.

MLB Betting Lines: New York +1.5, Boston -1.5, Game Total: 10 runs

Boston is faring much worse in the early season MLB betting lines than expected, as the Red Sox were the preseason pick to dominate the American League, but so far have done none of that.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Phil Hughes (0-1, 11.25) vs John Lackey (0-1, 22.09)

The key for Boston to save their season is two-fold.  The Red Sox must start hitting the baseball and must find consistency in the pitching rotation.  Tonight, Lackey must overlook his dismal season start against the Texas Rangers, in which he gave up 10 hits and nine runs, and focus on containing the Yankee lineup.

Most importantly, Boston can’t panic yet, but just keep playing the game.

New York is looking a bit vulnerable so far this season as well.  With a starting rotation led by CC Sabathia, the Yankees are menacing, but as for the rest of the rotation?  New York needs to be able to count on stability all the way down the rotation, and needs starting pitchers that can manage their pitch count to last longer in games and get more outs. The team ERA for the Yankees after six games is near 5.00.

Tonight on the stripe for New York is Phil Hughes, who gave up five hits, two of which were homers, to the Detroit Tigers, taking a loss for his first start of the season.

Hughes has looked hittable recently, perhaps giving the Red Sox a good chance to start clicking their bats. However, Lackey did not show much ability to stop the Rangers, and it’s likely the Yankees can pound him good too.

With the game total set at 10 runs, baseball betting fans know that if the bats of these two teams begin to find the ball, it could be lights out.  Let’s take a chance on the bats and pick the Over for Game One of the Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry!
