MLB Betting – Marlins Extend Padres Losing Streak to Three

April 28, 2010

Here at BetOnline Sportsbook, we’re making our MLB picks for yet another crowded slate of diamond action on Tuesday night. Our attention turns to the second game of a duel between the San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins in South Beach.

In Game 1 of this series between National League rivals, the Padres were blown out of the water 10-1.

RHP Mat Latos was rocked for seven runs in just 2.2 innings of work. RHP Josh Johnson was spectacular once again, notching his second win of the season in a solid effort which included three hits and three ribbies at the plate.

San Diego Padres (11-8, +$430) vs. Florida Marlins (11-9, +$178)

Game Date/Time: Tuesday, April 27th, 7:10 ET
Game Location: Sun Life Stadium, Miami, FL
TV/Radio Broadcast: Channel 4 Sports, Fox Sports Florida, XM

MLB Odds:

San Diego Padres +1.5 -190 +110
(Jon Garland – R)
Florida Marlins -1.5 +160 -130
(Anibal Sanchez – R)
Total 9 O -105 9 U -115

RHP Jon Garland has improved in every one of his starts this season. He finally got his first win after three failed efforts by allowing just one run and six hits in seven frames at home against the Giants as a part of the eight-game winning streak that propelled San Diego to the top of the NL West standings.

He is just 1-2 on the season, but his 2.86 ERA is rock solid. Still, 12 walks against 10 strikeouts isn’t in any way impressive.

Garland is 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in four career starts against Florida.

The Marlins will throw RHP Anibal Sanchez in an effort to continue riding the wave of momentum they picked up Monday night.

Sanchez is also coming off of his first ‘W’ of the year. He allowed a season high nine hits and only struck out one batter, but he ultimately surrendered just one run in a 5-1 win over the Astros in the Lone Star State.

The 26 year old is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this season. Opposing batters are hitting .324 against him. Only walking five batters in three starts is solid, but striking out seven batters is just too low to succeed.

In 53 career outings, the right-hander has averaged a shade over four Ks per start.

This will be Sanchez’s first outing against the Padres in his career.

MLB Insider Tip: The Fish are 15-6 in Sanchez’s L/21 starts at Sun Life Stadium.

We’ve got a hard time backing Sanchez in this spot, particularly as a favorite, but it looks to be the lesser of the two evils.

San Diego’s eight-game winning streak was a flash in the pan, and Garland has been severely overrated from his days in the Windy City when he helped pitch the White Sox to the World Series.

That being said, we’ll make our MLB picks on the Marlins to take Game 2 of this series tonight.

My MLB Prediction: Florida Marlins (Sanchez)
