MLB Betting – Giants Will Cool Off Rockies

September 1, 2010

San Francisco is still within striking distance of the NL-West division title, although the Wild Card seems a more likely portal to the postseason for the Giants. Colorado’s portal is smaller, yet still existent. A strong baseball betting series versus San Fran is a must for their playoff hopes.

The Week That Was: Rockies

A very successful week for the Rockies began at home against the NL-East leading Atlanta Braves. The Rockies took the first two games with relative ease, winning 5-4 and 5-2 thanks to solid efforts all-around. The best moment of the series came in game three, when the Rockies overcame a nine-run deficit to beat the Braves 12-10. Colorado was down 10-1 in the third inning before matching the biggest comeback in franchise history for the three-game sweep.

A day-off preceded a weekend series with the Dodgers. Colorado dropped the opener 6-2 in embarrassing fashion, as all six Dodger runs came in the final two innings. But the Rockies were able to overcome, winning the next two games and the series. The big win came in the finale, as Carlos Gonzalez hit a pair of home runs in a 10-5 Colorado win.

The Week That Was: Giants

For all the talk of a lackluster San Francisco Giants offense, it definitely did not look like it in last week’s home series against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants scored 38(!) times in the three-game series, winning the first two games in the process. San Fran absolutely crushed the Reds 11-2 in the series opener, overshadowing a very strong start by Matt Cain (8 IP, 2 ER, 7K). The Giants scored even more runs in game two, embarrassing the Reds 16-5. But the game of the week was the series finale. Down 10-1 in the fifth, the Giants (just like Colorado) fought back to take a 11-10 lead going into the ninth. However they couldn’t nail down the win, allowing the tying run in the ninth and eventually losing 12-11 in the 12th inning.

All that offense disappeared in the early part of their series with Arizona. The Diamondbacks shutout the Giants 6-0 in the opener and clinched the series with an 11-3 crushing in game two. San Fran would avoid the sweep with a 9-7 win in the finale.

MLB Betting Matchup

The young righty known as Esmil Rogers is experiencing some hard times in his recent promotion to the starting rotation. Rogers was promoted at the beginning of the month to the starting five, and has responded with a 6.86 ERA and .360 BAA. His most recent start was by far the ugliest. He lasted only 1 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits in the process.

His counterpart, Madison Bumgarner, is also coming off a horrid start. Bumgarner was the starter in San Fran’s almost-miraculous comeback, allowing seven runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings. The difference between the two is that Bumgarner had success before allowing the seven-spot last week, going two straight outings where he lasted 7+ innings and gave up only two runs. Consistency is still an issue for the lefty, but there are definite signs of progress and greatness. It may not all come together versus Colorado, but he should have an easier time than Rogers.
