Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins’ days are numbered as the big rock is about to fall on him in Boulder. Despite a 3-1 start to the season, the Buffaloes are about to get blasted again as they kick off Big 12 play. Colorado was fairly fortunate in their 29-27 home win last week while being out-gained by Georgia 6.7 to 5.8 yards per play. Those yards per play numbers are a key stat when you bet on football, and Colorado will get stampeded in that area throughout the Big 12 season.

The Buffaloes were gouged in their only road game this season as California crushed them 52-7 in Berkeley. In their two games against capable passing teams, Colorado allowed 7.4 yards per pass play to both California and Hawaii. Now they try to slow Missouri’s NFL style spread offense that has dismantled Colorado the past three seasons. When you bet on football it’s exciting to support a team that can make big plays and achieve quick scores in the passing game. Missouri averages 38 points per game and quarterback Blaine Gabbert is plenty capable of leading his team to at least that tally against the weaker Colorado defense. Gabbert’s favorite target is wide receiver TJ Moe who leads the nation with over nine catches per game. Gabbert should have a big game against a Colorado defense that allows 236 passing yards per game, 65 percent completions and over 11.5 yards per pass completion.
Colorado’s thin secondary has already lost three defensive backs for the season and now must contain Missouri’s passing attack that averages 277 yards per game with quarterback Gabbert completing 69 percent of his passes. When you bet on football and this contest, note that the Tigers protect Gabbert well as they have allowed the fewest sacks (4) in the conference and the Buffaloes secondary is likely to get picked apart as they rank second to last in the Big 12 in pass efficiency defense.
Colorado’s offense is in better hands with quarterback Tyler Hansen, as the Buffaloes average 348 yards per game and 5.0 yards per play. But only Iowa State and Kansas are more inefficient on offense and with Colorado playing from behind it’s hard to imagine Hansen bring CU back as he averages just 179 passing yards per game with five touchdowns and five interceptions.
NCAA Insider Tip: Missouri is 3-0 SU and ATS the last three years versus Colorado with an average winning score of 50-9 while out-gaining the Buffaloes 486-190.
When you bet on football it’s important to review the match-ups and statistical profiles while evaluating schedules and opponents faced. Missouri has many statistical edges in this contest. Special teams are also problematic for Colorado as they have a low net punt average less than 34 yards per punt and Colorado’s kicker has made just one field goal.
My NCAA Football Predictions: Missouri Tigers (-11.5) -110
