Massive ACC Matchup – Clemson Invades UNC
January 22, 2009
ACC sports betting action heats up Wednesday night when a pair of 16-win squads hook up allowing college basketball bettors the opportunity to sink their teeth into a heavyweight match-up when the Clemson Tigers (16-1, 5-6-1 ATS) invade the Dean Dome to do battle with head coach Roy Williams’ Tarheels (16-2, 7-9 ATS). These two conference rivals last squared off in the championship game of the ACC Tournament last March in a game that saw Hansbrough and company outlast the pesky Tigers by an 86-81 final count. The five-point defeat saw the Tigers narrowly cover the 5.5-point closing spread, and the combined 167 points flew over the closing ‘total’ of 152. With this being the only meeting between these two clubs in the regular season, look for both clubs to do whatever necessary to grab the all important tie-breaker win. It would be a major confidence building victory for the Tigers whose program is yet to earn a SU victory in Chapel Hill after 53 visits.
BetOnline Oddsmakers have installed the host Tarheels as 14-point favorites in this ACC betting match-up and set the game ‘total’ at 162.5. Clemson’s a perfect 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in its four true road games this season, while UNC has won eight of its nine home games SU and managed a 2-6 ATS mark in its eight lined games.
Clemson suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday afternoon against the newly #1 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons. A 55% showing at the free throw line and a pathetic 26-77 (33.8%) effort from the field were one of many reasons the Tigers failed to cover the 2.5-point spread for its betting backers in the 78-68 home defeat. Clemson did show the ability to make up ground in a game storming back from a 58-44 deficit to claw to within 61-60, but the Deacons outscored them 17-8 the rest of the way to keep their perfect mark intact.
North Carolina’s gotten back to its winning ways since losing at home to Wake Forest back on January 11th. They steamrolled Virginia 83-61 in Charlottesville as 16.5-point road favorites, and narrowly missed out on covering its next game against Miami, winning 82-65 as 17.5-point home favorites. ACC 1st teamer Tyler Hansbrough played like a man possessed in those two games combining for 52 points and 19 rebounds, while the defense limited Virginia and Miami to shoot less than 40% from the field.
The 2004 season was the last time Clemson managed a SU win in this series. Since then, UNC is 9-0 SU and 5-4 ATS. Clemson’s a perfect 4-0 ATS the L/4 times it was installed a road underdog, and it’s 5-1 ATS its L/6 road games. UNC counters with a poor 1-5 ATS mark the L/6 times it was installed a home favorite, and a 1-5 ATS mark the L/6 times it was set as a home favorite of 13 or more points. The ‘over’ has cashed for NCAAB bettors 8 of the L/9 times Clemson was dogged on the road, and its 15-7 ATS the L/22 times off a Tarheels pointspread defeat.
Will the Tigers find a way to halt their insane 53 game losing streak in Chapel Hill, or will the Tarheels continue its home dominance against the Tigers and make its college basketball betting backers happy in the process?
