Long Shot Odds To Win Super Bowl 45 – Anyone Taking Chiefs, Seahawks?

January 6, 2011

Yes, I know that estimating the value of any long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45 seems like pointless conjecture at this point especially with the Patriots standing out as the hands down favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at +175. Still, no matter how much I try to pump up the usual suspects in the playoff picture, I can’t ignore what’s been happening in the sports world lately.

Most notably the San Francisco Giants won the World Series as the second-biggest long shot on the board when the playoffs began. Butler almost beat Duke in March Madness. Frankie Edgar beat B.J. Penn twice to win and retain his new lightweight championship in the UFC. The Chicago Blackhawks ended over 50 years of misery to win the Stanley Cup last season. Need I remind you that Oregon and Auburn are battling it out for the BCS National Championship game next week?

The 2010-11 sports season has been one of perilous twists and turns, so there’s a reason that the long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45 should attract at least a few flier bets out there. Let’s break down what to like and hate about the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks, who are basically pinpointed as the dumbest bets to win Super Bowl 45 in the NFL futures market.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (10-6 SU, 9-7 ATS)

What To Like:

They play extremely well at home, have two explosive playmakers in Jamal Charles and Dwyane Bowe who can explode at any given moment. As much as I’m not convinced by Matt Cassel, the guy has a habit of delivering. They’re also extremely well coached. Safety Eric Berry is a huge difference maker.

What Not To Like:

Matt Cassel’s adrenalin rush in post-surgery seems to have run out. The defense is also not very good up front. On the road, this team is almost entirely different, which isn’t to say they’re a horrific play. It just makes them slightly less trustworthy.

Why To Bet Them:

The reasons not to bet on the AFC’s long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45 is simple: Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Colts and Jets. The reason to bet on them is simply because they have a playoff veteran and leader in Thomas Jones, a pair of coordinators who have “been there” before and they’re a balanced offensive team. Besides at 40-to-1 odds, why not?

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (7-9 SU/ATS)

What To Like:

The “nothing to lose” factor. Pete Carroll has killed the football gods by making the playoffs after standing at the helm when USC was sanctioned out of the post season for two years. The defense can be miracle workers at times, but mostly only at home. Charlie Whitehurst is a complete unknown, which is obviously a bad thing as well.

What Not To Like:

They’re the Seahawks and the only team to make the playoffs with a losing record in recent playoff history. They’re horrific on the road. They can’t come from behind (at the very least they’re not built to). In their final six losses of the season, they averaged 16.1 points per game and gave up 31.3 points against.

Why To Bet Them:

As far as long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45, no team has more hilarious odds. Why not be that guy that bet $50 to win $4000 in the sportsbook? How much of a hero would you be to your friends and family? Nobody’s going to crucify you for throwing $50 away on a flier.

Also, as much as we like to slam Charlie Whitehurst’s face in to the ground, I can’t ignore that as unnerving as he is as a relative unknown, there could be some good things there. Yes I know we haven’t seen any evidence of that, but a guy in an absolute no lose situation is dangerous.

THE VERDICT

If you’re going with the major underdog, the Seahawks at +8000 are your bet. But if you’re making a more intelligent football decision, the Kansas City Chiefs are actually a better bet to cover their long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45 because they’re simply a much better football team through and through. This has been undoubtedly the year of the underdog, so if you’re inclined to throw some crap against the wall and hope that it sticks then I’d go with the Chiefs. The point is that you never know, and when it comes to the playoffs anything can happen.

Should you choose in to invest in the long shot odds to win Super Bowl 45, that’s what you’re hoping for anyways.
