Tom Brady and the 8-2 New England Patriots head to Detroit to take on the 2-8 Lions. The Patriots are rolling this season, and are one of the top teams in the league – especially after their victory over the Colts last weekend.
Detroit has lost three straight, including their devastating 35-19 beatdown at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. Detroit is .500 at home and winless on the road, but they are a blistering 7-3 against the spread. Will they be able to come back on a short week’s rest to stay within a score of the Pats?
New England is 5-4-1 ATS on the season, but have been facing strong competition. In their last 6 weeks, they faced Baltimore, San Diego, Minnesota, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. With an 8-2 SU record and a winning ATS campaign, you know New England is good.
The NFL odds have the point total for this game set at 50.5 – that’s high, but these are offensively potent teams. The Patriots have only scored fewer than 23 points once – and Detroit is one of the most pass-happy teams in the league. As both squads will opt to take to the air, that means the clock should be moving relatively slowly. Additionally, the Pats have a great chance of taking an early lead – which will leave the Lions to target Calvin Johnson for big downfield plays.
The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games that features New England as the favorite. They know how to score, and their defense is far from superior.
The Patriots have the 31st ranked pass defense in the league – giving up a massive 289.6 yards/game. Detroit has thrown an average of 255.9 – good enough for 6th in the NFL. Considering they’ve been relying on backup Shaun Hill for most of the season, that’s pretty good. Also keep in mind they’ve been down a lot, and are required to throw the ball. Jahvid Best isn’t running the ball like he did at the start of the year, so the air game is the only hope Detroit has to cover this spread.
Thanksgiving has featured some blowouts over the past few years, and this looks to be more of the same. The Patriots should have this game in hand by the second quarter, and will hold on to win by at least 10.
